LAURELS FALL STAKE PROGRAM. Manager Winn Announces Attractivo List of Events for Meeting in October. New York, July 20. As soon as the Empire City meeting closes on Tuesday next, general manager M. J. Winn will turn his attention to preliminary preparations for the October meeting at Laurel, which he will strive to make more than ordinarily attractive, both to owners of racing stables and the general public. To that end lie has announced a splendid stake program, embracing three new stakes, in addition to those usually scheduled at this Maryland track and with values materially increased. Overnight purse values are also to be increased at Laurel. The program which Manager Winn has instructed Racing Secretary Joseph McLennan to prepare, will embrace one handicap of ,000 daily and no overnight purse of less than 00. In anticipation of increased patronage from the horsemen, a considerable number of new stables are being built at the track. Mr. Winn will remain in the east indefinitely to attend to the preparations for the meeting. He lias just received word from Louisville that the crop of potatoes which Is being grown In the Churchill Downs track infield, is coming along fine and promises to be a bumper This crop was put in as a matter of public duty, in view of the urgent need for the utilization of all resources in the war crisis and the profits from the venture are to bo devoted to public purposes. The list of the Laurel stakes announced by Manager Winn, to close August 25, Is made up as follows: For Three -Year-Olds and Over. National Handicap, one mile and an eighth, ,500 added. Washington Handicap, one mile and an eighth, ,000 added. Baltimore Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth, ,000 added. Dixie Handicap, one mile and a quarter, ,500 added. Anne Arundel Selling Handicap, one mile and an eighth, ,500 added. Howard Selling Stakes, one mile and a sixteenth. ,500 added. For Three-Year-olds.
