DOWNFALL FOR FAVORITES ... . v Six in a Row Go Under in Defeat at Jefferson Park. Edith L., Lukemae, Fairly, His Nibs, Pas de Chance and Stout Heart the Offenders. New Orleans, La., December 14. Favorites were in total eclipse this afternoon, the entire sis choices going down in decisive defeat. Their failure resulted in the most unsatisfactory day that the backers have experienced since the opening of the meeting. The small fields of this afternoon, coupled with the cold weather, which made prospects for a big crowd to be present somewhat doubtful, caused a defection in the ranks of the layers ::nd only twenty-six price quoters shared in the rich harvest. The more venturesome evened up former losses and can also, probably, show a margin of profit on their operations to date in these parts. The overthrow of choices began in the initial race with the defeat of Edith L., and closely following came the downfall of Lukemae, Fairly, His Nibs, Pas de Chance and Stout Heart. In four instances the favorites even failed to get a part of the purse, the exceptions being Edith L., which landed third and Fairly, which brought up in second place. The difficult going contributed to make .results more uncertain, some of the leaders in the last sixteenth, when apparently having the purse in their control, would tire badly and be overhauled right at the end. Turco, which was brought here by John Gdode and has had two other owners during his brief sojourn in these parts, scored his third victory of the meeting when he won in the fourth race. There were no claims for him today. Considering the intense cold for these parts, a surprisingly large attendance was. present. The longer racing, five of the races being at a mile or over, being held the magnet that brought the big crowd to the track. H. B. Eeether, owner of Peach Blossom, recently taken in charge by the local police at the request of the United States government authorities, was today transferred to Covington, Ky., for further examination. The stewards are quietly investigating into the running of No Manager, which ran in such poor fashion Thursday. J. O. Talbott, whose extensive string of racers is here in charge of S, A. Clonton, was among the visitors this afternoon. Because of the cold, jockeys were told to disregard slight overweight if it would tend more to their comfort by riding in sweaters. Jockey Scott was suspended by starter Dade for six days in the second race for incompetency, failing to get Requiram away from the barrier with the others. Jockey Sutherland has signed a three years contract witli W. Sharrard. The easterners again split the program - with the Kentuckians, horses coming from both sections, accounting for three races as their share. Jockey Mack Garner again reported sick and had to cancel his engagements.
