MANY HORSES AT MARYLAND TRACKS Horsemen Winter Their Racers at Piralice Laurel Benning and Other Courses Baltimore Mil January 25 The race tracks about Baltimore Washington and Laurel are lions ins a greater number of thoroughbreds this winter than have spent the off season in these parts in fifteen or twenty years The failure of some horsemen to secure railroad transportation to the winter racing ylaces is partially responsible for this condition but not wholly Racing next spring and summer will probably be butter hereabouts and in New York State than the country lias known in ten or a dozen years Many of the horsemen who used to go to the winter tracks after the finish of the Maryland seiison at Howie are resting their charges to the end that they may be fresh and good from the first of April on There are over 500 runners of various ages and kinds in the Dis ¬ trict of Columbia and Maryland at Benning Laurel Park Havre de Grace Bowie and the Gentlemans Driving Park etc upwards of 1250 of them being at Henning 125 at Howie and about 100 in the neigh ¬ borhood ParkThe of Plmlico and the Driving Park The horses at the Driving Park which successive snows thaws sleet storms and spasms of zero temperature have converted into a glacier belong to the establishments of II II A West C K Clement Kdward McBride Jiile Carson George P Sherman and one or two others The Calumet stable is at the old Jennings stock farm near Mount Washington WashingtonMr Mr West a Itritish army officer who was dis ¬ charged from the service after a gassing on the Flanders front a year ago last fall has one of the most prepossessing threeiyenrolds hereabouts at he Driving Park in King Agrippa an Irishbred son of Hoi Ilerode Chaperon Chaperon was winner herself King Agrippa raced in Great Pri tain and Ireland last year anil came over in the autumn with Appleton AViske u fouryearold chestnut filly by Pitton Chancey Fellow u six yearold gelding by Pain Haply and two or three others And Mr West has a half dozen other run ¬ ners still in Ireland awaiting a favorable oppor ¬ tunity to cross the Atlantic Mr West intend to do his racing on this side hereafter Chancey hereafterChancey Fellow has won on the flat over hurdles and through the field lie schooled the Pimlico course u couple of times last fall and made a fa ¬ vorable impression Chancey Fellow will try his lick in the crosscountry specials or the coming spring meetings at Havre de Grace and Pimlico and then go on to New York Appleton Wiske and Annie Edgar also are to be nut through the field They will begin their schooling as soon as the Pim ¬ lico course is thrown open The opening of the Pimlico field will probably come earlier this year than usual Hard winters in Maryland generally are followed by early springs springsCLEMENT CLEMENT HAS PROMISING STABLE STABLEMr Mr Clements stable which is under the charge of Edward MeBride in made up of the threeyear olds Mary Maud and Peerless One and the two yearolds Frizeur Weymouth Girl Eddie McBride and Cantkost Mary Maud a daughter of Irish Lad Frizette is French bred She is a halfsister of Crimper and Frizzle and she showed marked pro ¬ ficiency in long distance running at Pimlico in No ¬ vember She is to be the Preakness candidate of the Clement establishment Peerless One a brown colt of robust luild by Jack Atkin Sans Pareil II was brought to the races last spring by ICobert AVal den He won three races in the early part of the season after which he was put by He is growing satisfactorily satisfactorilyFrizeur Frizeur is a chestnut filly by Sweeper Frizette She is accordingly a halfsister of Mary Maud Crimper and Frizzle Horse folk about Baltimore unite in pronouncing Frizeur the best looker of the twoyearolds ParkKddie quartered at the Driving Park Kddie McHride a son of the English stallion Llangwm Kate Ancelo which cost McHride 2000 at the Saratoga sales last summer is a little fel ¬ low which looks as though he might mature daughter of Maj Thomas C McDowells young stallion ManagerMr The Manager Mr Clement is a Boston broker who has moved to Maryland became a citizen of the Old Line state in regular form and bought a place in the Green Spring valley He has decided to breed horses in Maryland and ultimately lie will have a stable of jumpers jumpersMfllrldes Mfllrldes own stable consists of the threeyear olds Charley Leydecker a twoyearold slake win ¬ ner in Maryland and in Canada last year Joseph P Murphy and Tit for Tat and the twoyearolds Mrs Kate Leydecker Little Maudie John Cnllen Old Hill Bender May paid 2500 of his own money for Jack Leary 1000 for John Cullen and 500 apiece for Mrs Kate Leydecker and Little Maudie Mrs Kate Leydecker a daughter of August Helmonts stal ¬ lion Trap Itoek is a halfsister of Marianao and Ueprobate John Cullens sire was Assagai the son of Spearmint which sent as fine a looking band of yearlings to the Saratoga sales last August as had been seen in many a day John Cullen is a bay big boned strong ribbed and splendidly underpinned Ho may not come to hand as quickly is will some of the others but he looks as though he might maintain his speed a long way Jack Leary is a brown colt of heroic proportions by Jack Atkin Sneerwell McBride has a weakness for the offspring of Jack Atkin because1 of his experi ¬ ence last year with Charley Lcydecker anil Peer ¬ less One May Hustle which is a daughter of All old La Primera cost only 300 last summer Nevertheless she worked faster than any youngster that will bear the McHride silks next racing sea ¬ son Parringtun will do the riding for the Clement McHride establishment He has signed a two years contract with Mr Clement McBride developed Iarrington IarringtonWalter Walter House is wintering the threeyearold Fragonard at the Driving Park also a twoyearold by Plaudit Victoria M Jule Carson has sent Half Hock to the stud in Kentucky but he is wintering the threeyearolds Jim Dinney Lady Gertrude Odd Nenhew and Phalaris and twoyear olds by Uncle and Peter Quince at the Driving DrivingThe The Calumet Stable which is owned by C M Garrison of New York is being wintered at the Jennings farm by young William Jennings now proprietor of the Glengar Stud one of Marylands oldest thoroughbred nurseries He is managing a stable which consists of the threeyearolds Moose head George AV Averv and Daisy Vane and two yearolds by Celt Sister Anna 1een oDay Tif ¬ fany Blend Transvaal Miss Belamy Macdonald II Chryseis and Santrv Silent Queen QueenThere There will be riders a lenty at Pimlico to gallop these horses when winter breaks J Butwell is here readying up for next seasons work So are 3ft Atee the two McTaggarts and one or two others Butwell lias been notified to report for examina ¬ tion in the next draft but he expects to be re ¬ jected The first time lie appeared before an army board he was turned down because he was not tall enough He hasnt grown in height since then Tom McTaggnrt who was suspended indefinitely last spring by the stewards of the Jockey Club for violating the rule against betting believes that he will be licensed again before the Powie opening on April 1 His case has been referred to the licensing committee of the Tockev Club which is a step toward reinstatement McTaggart is keeping fit by steady gymnasium work
