THRIVING IN COLD CLIMATE Horses Wintering at New York Tracks Are in Best of Health No Sickness at Any of the Long LongIsland Island Courses Stewards StewardsMeeting Meeting Soon New York February 1 Never has there been nuch a favorable season for the health of horses as the present winter hereabouts Not a sick horse is the report of every trainer who is wintering at sinv of the local tracks This is remarkable in view oflhe fact that it is only in late years that horse ¬ men have spent their winters here in any great numbers numbersThere There was a time when trainers wintered in warm ¬ er climates than New York state but now they seem to be satisfied that the plains of Hempstead or the stalls of GravcMnd are good enough for any ¬ body bodySince Since the track at Charleston was built some have pitched their tents in that locality John Sanfords horses are located there this year along with a few other stables but reports are not nearly as encour ¬ aging from that section as they are from liclmont Jark JarkAValter AValter Jennings prepared the Macomber stable rt Charleston last winter lie evidently was not en ¬ tirely satisfied for lie housed his charges at Hel mont Park this year and Mr Macomber built a pre ¬ tentious stable for their occupancy occupancyThe The horses are doing better than the men said Sandy McNaughton Some of the boys have been taken down with pnueinonia and colds have been prevalent yet the horses are all thriving One never Jiears a cough from a stall and the medicine bottle is out of the question questionIf If the weather only breaks early there will be a liPalthv Jmiid of horses racing this year Of course K tiiaws anil breaking weather may be such that sickness will follow but at the present time every liorse is rugged and ready for meals mealsTom Tom Welch spoke in the same strain as McNaugh ¬ ton as also did Dick Miller and Jack Goldsborough llci orts from Aiken and other sections of South Carolina say the winter has been rather severe severeWater Water pipes have frozen down there said John Sanford which indicates the severity of the sea ¬ son and it may have its effect on the horses that have wintered in that section This question can only be settled later when they got to racing racingBELMONT BELMONT PARK IDEAL PLACE PLACEAll All of which indicates Hclmont Park can be listed as an excellent place for wintering horses horsesNo No one knows and if thev do they will not tell when Major August Itelmont will return to this country from France He has been there many weeks and nothing has been published as to his whereabouts or his doings All one knows is that lie is somewhere in France FranceWhether Whether he will return in time for the opening of the racing season at Itelmont Park is not known He niay be here and he may not is the answer to all questions on the subject by his associates in racing and business circles It is not imperative that he attend meetings of the stewards of the Jockey Club there being a quorum collectable with ¬ out him with Frank K Sturgis acting chairman chairmanNo No date has been set for the next meeting of the stewards but it is probable there will be a gather ¬ ing of the turf governors eary next month there being questions of importance to discuss in regard to dates and the collection of war taxes taxesWhile While the stewards may not dictate the methods of tax collection there is little doubt they will be consulted by the managers of the racing asso ¬ ciations for their views not as a body perhaps but as individuals as it is one of importance and one that should be uniform in its system systemAt At 1imlico and Howie last autumn all track officials owners trainers jockeys valets iu fact everyone contributing to the sport in a helpful way wen exempt they being considered part of the show as are actors musicians and employes of a theater Tax coupons were bought at the same window as badges and the method worked satis ¬ factorily As AV P Kings had many interviews with the Internal Revenue officials in AVashington as to requirements the methods employed complied with the governments wishes Consequently it is presumed the same system will be employed on the local tracks that prevailed in Maryland last year yearMr Mr Riggs who was n the city a few days ago intimated the same rules will govern this year as last with but little change if any
