ARMY OFFICERS TO OFFER PROTEST Against Enactment of Any Legislation Tending to Injure or Discourage Horse Racing Annapolis Md February 12 It is intimated here that a number of prominent officers in the regular army of the United States will come to Annapolis tomorrow to protest to the Legislature of Maryland against the enactment of any legislation that will have a tendency to injure fir discourage horse racing racingThese These officers believe it is asserted that it is essential to the best interests of the country that the raising of thoroughbreds be encouraged in every way Despite the use being made of motor trucks the army must have a great many horses and ex ¬ perience has shown that the thoroughbred and thor ¬ oughbred cross all things considered is the best military horse in existence existenceSuch Such horses have stamina action and courage No other breed equals them in these particulars No other breed even approaches them for cavalry purMses and the army is said to feel that the use ¬ fulness of that branch of the service is by no means at an end In fact in any war we may have to fight in this country the opinion is that there will be a great demand for cavalry cavalryFEEL FEEL RACING IS ESSENTIAL ESSENTIALEntertaining Entertaining such opinions tins army officers are said to feel racing is essential as the only means of determining the fitness of horses to be used for breeding purposes and therefore for guaranteeing army remounts They are familiar with the en ¬ couragement given to the raising of thoroughbreds and thoroughbred crosses In foreign countries where the subject is one to which much thoughtful study has been given givenOther Other prominent citizens of Baltimore and sev ¬ eral authorities on the race horse also will protest against the bill These are men who love racing for racings sake and who have nothing to lose by any action the legislature may take In other words they are disinterested people in so far as their pocketlxioks are concerned But they do re ¬ sent the efforts of a few moralists to dictate what they shall do and how they shall live
