TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS FORECAST FORECASTEnglands Englands at Present Most Valuable Race and Its Possible Contestants I With the exception of the St Logor in 1014 the only classic races that have stood unchanged since the outbreak of the war have been the Two and One Thousand Guineas and it will be the same next season 1 B Joel won the last Doneaster classic proper with Black Jester but since then little has been seen of the black and red cap most of the Cjiildwiekhury yearlings having been sold to Ameri ¬ ca but this year six of the foals were purchased by Mr Black who also bought the yearling by Polymelus Doris dam of Suhstar Some years ago there was an outcry against the executives of Kp som and Doncaster because the Derby Oaks and St Leger had no added money and some pressure was brought to bear which led to each race being made of a guaranteed value No such conditions are attached to the Thousands which are en ¬ tirely selfsupporting being in each instance a sweepstakes of 100 sovereigns each half forfeit without a shilling being drawn from the race fund Even o they appeal so strongly to the principal owners that their value exceeds that of the substi ¬ tution classic events and of course it will be the same next year The war Derbv and Oaks each with 1000 sovereigns added were open for two yearolds instead of yearlings at the end of their first season and in the circumstances it is sur ¬ prising that such good entries have been secured as fiftyfive for one and fortyoiie for the other otherTHE THE GUINEAS OF THIS YEAR YEARThe The Two Thousand Guineas is to be decided on May Day and although it is looking a long way ahead with all sorts of risks and chances to bo en ¬ countered in the meantime 1 propose to offer a few words on the race as it stands at present Of the Kings horses Parsifal Soap Bubble and Jut ¬ land it seems safe to nredict that the first will prove the Simon Pure and a worthy representative in the bargain Framed on a larger scale and showing plenty of quality he is halfbrother by Bayardo to Friar Marcus and impressed me more than favorably when I was privileged to see him stripped in his box a short time ago It is clear that so far he has wintered most satisfactorily and granted good health he will make un into a grandlooking horse He was still backward when he made his first appearance in the Clearwell Stakes in October and ran extremely well behind the smart Damask therefore I regard him as a colt of great possibilities I trust he will have better lack than did Llewellyn whose sudden death de ¬ prived the King of undoubtedly his best threeyear old last season Major Astor has a wellbred and goodlooking winner in Blink a brown colt by Sun star Winkipop which made a promising debut when winning the Gamlingay Plate from Lady Bay ¬ ardo Therniogene and his subsequent running in the Rons Memorial Stakes may be ignored for the race was won at the start and was one of the most unsatisfactory juvenile trials of the season seasonA A PROMISING ARRAY OF ELIGIBLES ELIGIBLESBred Bred in the same paddocks were Skyrocket a chestnut colt by Sunstar Maid of the Mist and Jack Point a brown colt by Swynford Popinjay but both were sold as yearlings the former to Sir W T Tatem and tiie latter to Mr Black It is to be regretted that Skyrocket is touched in his wind for though we have had evidence of his smartness the probability is that he will not stay and he has not been entered for the Derby which Is significant and I expect a more reliable candidate will be found in Scatwell which also had excellent form to his credit though at his last essay he failed to concede ten pounds to Violinist while beating Gainsborough under similar condition Unfortunately the colt went amiss coughing and could not fulfill his autumn engage ¬ ments including the Free Handicap in which lie had top weight so that the official keeper of the match book evidently holds a high opinion of him Jack Point has not yet run in public and all that can be said of him is that he is a fine horse that looks and goes well Bapanme is a Bayardo colt that helped to swell the Maiiton twoyearold winnings but there are others in the stable to l e preferred to him notably Ijidy James Douglas harming Bayardo colt Gainsborough which luck ¬ ily as it would now seem failed to reach his re ¬ serve when offered as a yearling and for which a private offer made afterwards Jiy L Winans was Icclined He was not at his best when beaten in the race alwve referred to but was thoroughly well when in the Autumn Stakes he easily ac ¬ counted for Freesia while Violinist was unplaced But there Is nothing to show thnt he can beat Scat well at even weights Gainsborough was I be ¬ lieve considered the most promising of the re ¬ markable team of twoyearolds at Manton with plenty of scope for improvement and according to all accounts he has done well since he retired for the winter winterDEEP DEEP SEA PANDION AND OTHERS OTHERSIlelion Ilelion is likely to prove better than Lord Carnar ¬ vons Royal Robe and Gibbon is an unknown quan ¬ tity but from what I have seen of the son of Cam brae I fear lie is not too reliable A heavy gamble was upset when he made no show against Sweet ¬ ness Old Drury and Ferry in a Maiden Plate Prince Chimay has more charm for me than either of Mr Cazalets other pair Air Raid or Plaxtol but the eolt will have to improve considerably to attain to the first rank as will Major Claytons Galician and Sir Win Cookes Rocksavage which is decidedly useful but too small even to develop into a cham ¬ pion Deep Sea is Mr Coxs sole hope and may do better next year without emulating the deeds of Bayardo Leinberg and Gay Crusader in the same ownership and there is nothing in past records to suggest the probability of Buzz Off Anagram Kam arad or The Plough taking classic honors Mr S B Joel has two big fine colts in Pandion by Poly ¬ melus Sun Angel and Polyscope by the same sire and Sundrop and latter was perhaps not quite up to tiie mark when he ran Bapaume out of the Gamlin yay Plate by a head He however finished in much more resolute style than was the habit of his brother Polychromy and bids fair to grow into a fine horse next year Pandions name will always be associated with the blunder made by TattersalFs committee but alls well that ends well and the matter has now been property settled The colt on that occasion did a distinctly stylish performance for such a big horse and I certainly do not think we saw the best of him in the Rons Memorial Stakes vhich as aforesaid Violinist converted into a one horse race There is one little if about Pandion ind that is his inclination to flounder when gallop ¬ ing down hill otherwise he is almost impossible to fault in any respect respectA A GROUP OF POSSIBLES POSSIBLESMajor Major McCalmonts Roideur is useful and per ¬ haps tlife same remark applies to Mr Raphaels Shenley Boy in the same stable Of the Duke of Portlands four Best Born and Chilwell have not un and there is little encouragement to fancy ither Tiercel or Sir Berkeley while Lord Rose he rjs Country Buck Lyric and Prunello are strangers to a race course and although a fine olt Epigram is hardly good enough for flrst lass company and in the same category may be included bis stablemate Lord Durhams Chrysolans Vor am the Stanley House prospects particularly right though Lord Derbys halfbrother to Piia laris by Swvnford is a big commanding horse f which nothing in yet known in public Cattegat mother unknown quantity but a fine horse by Kaditim Catgut is nominated in partnership by Maj Evelyn de Rothschild a recent victim in the war and his brother Capt Anthony and al ¬ though this form of entry is a novelty it is I upiHse en regie or it would not have been ac epted at the registry office I do not think there is much to be said in favor of any of the others ind taking the form as it stands the best chances ippcar to be held by Scatwell Gainsborough and Iandion though I shall be disapi ointed if Parsifal lues nt turn out a good horse Vigilant in London Sportsman
