I • I I 1 APPROVE RUNNING OF KINGS PLATE Royal Assent Seen in Usual Gift of Fifty Guineas by His Majesty, King George. Toronto. Out.. May 9.— The decision of the Ontario Jockey Club to run the Kings Plate this year and preserve the record of this famous race as the oldest fixture run continuously in this country. has met with approval here and abroad. King George Y. has signified bis approval by the usual royal donatio!! of fifty guineas. This royal donation was originally made in lS."i9 by Queen Victoria, tinon the oetition of the Toronto Turf Club, through "Sir Edmund Head, the then governor-general. The headquarters of the club were at W. C. Keeles farm at Carleton. and the secretary-treasurer was Col. R. L. Denison. The prayer of the petitioners was for a Queens Plate of I TiO iHittmls. which was granted "to be run for at Toronto or such other place in Upper Canada as , her Majesty might appoint." _ For lour years. lN«iO-l.Nfi3, the race was run at • Carleton and subsequently, under political jires- I sure at Guelph. Ij.ndon. Hamilton. St. Catherines. . Whitby. Kingston. Ottawa. Barrie, Woodstock, i Prescott and Picton. In 1KS3 her Majesty Queen Victoria, at the instance of the present Duke ol I Argyll, gave her sanction to an understanding with the founders of the Ontario Jockey Club that the I race should therefore be established permanently here. Time has nroved this to lie a wise decision. I as under the control of the Ontario Jockey Club.
