Two Preakness Stakes Instead of One, Each With 5,000 Added Baltimore. Md.. May 14. — When the Maryland Jockey Club announced early in the present year that it xvould add 5,000 to the Preakness Stakes, what was formerly considered as an ordinary feature of Pimlico Spring racing, became one of the most talked of stake races in the country, xieing in interest with the famous Kentucky Derby. It proxed the magnet that drexv an imposing entry iist of one hundred and forty-four nominations, including representatives of sexenty-cne different owners, xvith all the best two-year-olds of last year among them. Of the many innoxations introduced by the Maryland Jockey Club in the past few years, none proved more popular than making the Preakness the greatest and most valuable of the three-year-old races of tho east. However, that eldest and most famous of Marylands racing organizations is not at the end cf its innovations, judging from the surprising announcement made on the eve of the running of the Preakness Stakes. At a meeting of the directors of the Maryland Jockey Club, held last night, it was decided that in the event of there being twenty or more horses named to go in the Preakness Stakes, that the race xvould be run in two divisions and that the club would add the full amount of 5,000 to each. There were twenty-six named to go in the big race and this means that nisead oi one Preakness Stakes, there will be two and that the Maryland Jockey Club will hang up 0,000 in added money to them. The race was divided by the different owners being draxvn, which accounts for only eleven horses being named in one division, while fifteen are named in the other. The Preakness Stakes will be run as the fourth and sixth races tomorroxx-. Just what disposition will be made of the Woorilawn Vase, which goes to the winner, has not been decided. The winners of each of the j dixisicn of the race, will either draw for the I trophy or a special will be given next fall I between the pair to decide the ownership. i Year. First. Jockeys. Wt.
