Tacola was the runner-up and Fruit Cake headed the others. Xine of the best short distance racers in these iwirts. including Solly. Prince of Como and A. X. Akin, wen* among the starters and for a brief period during the ra -e. figured prominently, but when the decisive racing came, the McLean representative easily proved his sii| eriority and was only mildly ridden to retain th - lead. The 140 pounds that Solly was carrying proved his undoing and his long string of successes was broken. He strove gamely in the early racing and. in company with Prince of Como. went out to make a fast pace, while Leocharos. though away well, was left IM-Iiind and through the first quarter served as whipix-r iu. OBrien rushed him just before going to the first turn and. finding the horse responsive, took advantage of his spied to rush him through the fii Id, but before reaching the stretch, had to guide him wide. But it made no difference to Leochares and he continued to gain in steady fashion and, passing Tacola, the only one that stood Ixtween him and victory, in the last sixteenth, was going well at the end. Tacola had no difficulty in beating Fruit Cake for second place. SoHy tired ix-n-eptiWy In the stretch and brought up in last place. In addition to scoring an impressive victory this afternoon, it marked the second time that LeiK-hares has placed the stake to his credit, having accounted for it previously in 1914. Mr. McLean, who remained over to witness the running of his representative, was warmly congratulated and was highly elated with the horses performance. Leochares again figured during the afternoon in an indirect way. when his track record of 1:37%. which has endured here for years, was reduced by Bradleys Choice, winner of the fourth race for a purse of *1.000. The new record was 1:37% and it appeared as if Bradleys Choice, which at present is in superb form, could have gone much faster had he been ridden out. for he won with consumate ease from Grundy and Bufortl. DOUGLAS PARKS LARGEST CROWD. An immense throng, far in excess of any former gathering at this traek, were unmindful of the heat that again was prevalent and witnessed some interesting and fast racing. The Ix-ttiug activities also reached a record amount, but those who pinned their hopes to the favorites were again ihx.me.l to disappointment, as the choices were repeatodly Isiwled over. The successful favorites wen- Bradleys Choice and Sedan, both backed with rare confidence. Both horses are trained by C. Hawk, but Sedan will iu future run in anothers interest, as he was claimed by W. Perkins for ,600. Jockey II. Lunsford .was snsiiendcd for five days by the stewards for his attempted interference with si-dan during the running of the second race. Trainer J. S. Ward announced this afternoon that Kscobas ailment was not as grave as reixirted. but that he still showed traces of fever and may not bo seen in action until the final days of the meeting here. Cudgel, the present favorite for the Kentucky Handicap, was given a mile work this morning at Churchill Downs and covered the distance in 1:11 in easy style. Trainer Bedwell and jockey Lyke will Ik- hen-" tomorrow from Xew York and will return with the horses Sunday.
