CUDGEL FAVORITE FOR THE SUBURBAN HANDICAP TO BE RUN AT BELMONT PARK TODAY New York, June 7. — The Suburban Handicap will be run at Belmont Park today. Time was when such an announcement was hailed with delight by many thousand metropolitan racing enthusiasts, who had for weeks keenly anticipated the running of that popular event, when they would go in countless number? to eld Sheepshead Bay to see the kings and queens of the turf battle for supremacy. Today Sheepshead Bay is no longer used for racing purposes and through the courtesy of the Coney Island Jockey Ciub, the Suburban is now decided at Belmont Park. Judging from the unusual interest displayed in racing this year, it would not be surprising, weather permitting, to see an attendance at the palatial home of the Westchester Racing Association this afternoon, equal in numbers, if not surpassing, the greatest of those of thr eld days. The history of the l-uburbsn dates back to 1S84, when General Monroe won its first running. From that year down to the present time, the greatest horseh cf each year have been among its contestants. Never has a horse of inferior merit won the Suburban. A glance at the list of its winners reveals the names of, among others, such cehbrated turf stars as Salvatcr. Henry cf Navarre, Ben Brush. Imp, Eiiiley Mack, Africander, Hermis, Beldame, Badot, Fitz Herbert, Olambala and Whisk Broom II. It was in ths Suburban that H. P. Whitneys great horse Whisk Broom II. ran a mile and a quarter in 2:00, the fastest time for that distance on record in this or any other country. When the entries closed for this years running of the Suburban, it promised to furnish a race in keeping with its best traditions, but the absence on account of injuries of one kind or another of Hourless, Old Rosebud, Strom-boli, Omar Khayyani, Westy Hogan and Camp- I fire, has robbed it of much interest. Now, on I the eve of the big race, the weather has interfered and further reduced the field, only six being named to start. Cudgel, Spur, Hendrie, Hollistcr, Johren and Battle will make up the field. Cudgel, despite his heavy impost of 133 pound?, will undoubtedly go to the post favorite. He will be ridden by Lyke. Spur, in the opinion of the talent, will be his most dangerous opponent. The last time they met, only a neck separated them and in the opinion of good judges, Cudgel should have won, as Lyke made his run a trifle too late. Schuttinger will have the mount on Spur. Hollister arrived in good condition from Kentucky and the westerners, who have seen him run all his races this spring, intimate that the Macomber horse will take some beating with 113 pounds in the saddle. Loftus will be his pilot. Hendrie is capable cf better things than he has shown this spring and just at present he is considered at the top of his form. He will be ridden by Peak. Battle is a filly of much better quality than the general public believe and her race Thursday was in the nature of a work-out for the Suburban. McTaggart will have the mount on this fleet daughter of Hastings. Johren3 defeat of Corn Tassel on Thursday earned for the Spearmint colt a penalty of five pounds in the big race .tomorrow. He will be ridden by Frank Robinson. The prospects now are that the track will be heavy tomorrow and. if Cudgel can concede the weight and beat such shifty opponents under such conditions, he will indeed be hailed as the horse of the year. .The tabulated history of the Suburban Handicap from the year of its institution to the present time is here presented: War.
