PEN ROSE MORE THAN USEFUL FILLY With the possible exception of Blue Laddie and Elfin Queen, no two-year-old racing in the east has at t raited more attention than Pen Kose. The Triple Springs Farm Stable liouglit the Sweep— Hanrose filly at auction last year for ,050 and evidently secured a bargain. Pen Rose made her racing debut at Havre de firace in I dash of a half mile, in which she displayed a high order of sjieed and easily tieat the favorite Nelle Yorke by a length and a half. Her next start was at the same track and again she beat Nelle Yorke. but on this occasion she had her work cut out to do so. Then came her first defeat, when at Pimlico she was lieaten by Mrs. Kate Lcydecker in a holly contested finish. Pen Rose tiring after overtaking the leader and losing the decision by I neck. Tiien followed ill quick succession two runaway victories for the Sweep filly. Pen Rose heating Agnes Cook by six lengths in the one and Little Miiidie by eight lengths in the other. After the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting. Pen Base was shipiHd to Jamaica. Her first start there resulted in her second defeat of the season. Aunt 1iiinh took her measure on that occasion, but it was not so much the prowess of the winner as the had luck Pen Rose ex|»erienced in the race that fioat her. She was shuffled back on the first turn, then can xtrem.ly wide in the stretch and. finishing like a whirlwind, was only a half length lie hind the winner at the end. Since then Pen Rose has won four straight victories, all easily achieved and in her race of Friday she established a new track record. While Pen Rose has not met and defeated the top-notehers in the juvenile division, she has proved herself a most useful and consistent filly, well worth having in any mans stable. At least several turf men at Belmont Park Friday undoubtedly entertained that opinion when they bid her up from an entered selling price of ,800 to $,.505. one of the largest run-ups ever recorded in this country.
