CLOSE Of A FINE MEETING Latonia Racing Ends with An Overflowing Attendance Batter Cake Proves Victress in the Race for the Valuable Cincinnati Trophy Latonia Ky July 13 E R Bradleys English bred filly Hatter Cake a daughter of Buckwheat Macaroon ridden l y E Pool took the measure of all the good twoyearolds that could be mustered here when she accounted for the Cincinnati Trophy worth 5870 net and a handsome chest of silver of over 1000 in value Cerinus carrying the colors of O Rogers and ridden by J Gruber landed in sec ¬ ond place and Henry Roberts on which I Connelly was up beat St Bernard oa which AV Knapp had the mount for third money There were four ¬ teen starters St Bernard and Colonel Livingston representing 15 J Brannoii and Uncle White and Candle Light running in the McLean interests The winner ran an excellent race and made a timely sprint that carried her to victory With equal racing luck Cerinus would have been the victor for his showing was by far the best of any of the starters Interference soon after the start caused him to be far back in the early running and he closed an immense gap in the last quarter to finish fastest of all allThe The early running was dominated by Colonel Liv ¬ ingston Col Taylor and Ticklish the former set ¬ ting the pace This trio ran practically on even terms until reaching the stretch turn where they gradually gave way St Bernard a moment later aiflwarnig as if he would win but Hatter Cake at this point loomed up with her deciding challenge tind was soon followed by Cerinus and Henry Roberts In the final sixteenth Batter Cake held to her task well and had a half length margin on the fast coming Cerinns at the finish St Bernard tired perceptibly in the last few strides and it enabled Henry marginThe Roberts to beat him by a scant margin The disappointment of the race was Uncle White which was far back at all times and failed to dis ¬ play his former sensational rushes when coming through the stretch He suffered from some inter ¬ ference in the last eighth which might have thrown him off his strides stridesWith With the running of the closing race won by Williams Bros Cheer Leader came curtains for Kentucky spring and summer racing and it likewise marked the close of one of the most successful meet ¬ ings enjoyed in the history of Latonia Todays attendance was of immense proportions and dis ¬ played more enthusiasm than usual Their betting activities was also of a record total totalSecretary Secretary Campbells final racing offering was an excellent arrangement and brought together some of excitement before the racing when Federal officials posted themselves at the various gates and demanded to be shown the regis ¬ tration and classification card of each draft age man on their entrance The entry of the latter is therefore still barred while those of A X Akin Troilus and others will be received The horse Smart Money had already been transferred to other hands and is now at Saratoga SaratogaE E R Bradley was highly elated over the success of his filly Batter Cake in the Cincinnati Trophy as much on account of the magnificient chest of solid silver that went with the winning of the race as a trophy as for the substantial amount of the stakes After the finish of the race Mr Bradley was called into the stewards stand and formally presented with the 1000 trophy by Presiding Stew ¬ ard Price in behalf of the Latonia management in most appropriate words The trophy will be sent to his splendidly appointed Idle Hour Farm at Lexington Ky There was a general feeling of satisfaction that the trophy had been won by as good a sportsman as Mr Bradley has shown himself to be on the turf He has spent his money liberally in his breeding and racing ventures and it was on everybodys lips after the race that he abundantly deserved the success which the winning of this important nice represented representedA A number of racing followers that have been in attendance at the meeting here will leave for Xew York tomorrow to take part in the Empire City track racing and later go to Saratoga SaratogaJ J S Ward has decided to shin his horses to Sara ¬ toga and will
