TOUGH SEASON FOR SCHORR STABLE Memphis Turfman Had Only One Winner During Entire Kentucky Spring and Summer Racing Louisville Ky July 22 The end of the spring aud summer racing season in Kentucky found J W Schorr champion of the hard luck division and further still his bad luck seems to be pursuing him since the sport wound up in the Blue Grass State After going sixtysix racing days and winning only one race the Memphis turfman decided that his stable needed new blood Accordingly he pur ¬ chased Lady Ivan from W W Darden after she was beaten a nose in a threequarters race by Blue Pamdisc and he figured that he would win a few races and wagers with her at Empire City and Saratoga SaratogaFate Fate decreed otherwise however On the way to New York Lady Ivan broke down in the car and it is doubtful if trainers Louis Taubor and Eddie Dolling will be able to get her to the races before fall at the earliest The mishap to Lady Ivan was a most unusual one and only a man in the hardest kind of luck could have had it happen to one of his horses It is not an uncommon thing for horses to break down either in races or while working in the morning but to have one go wrong while standing still in a car is about the limit limitThe The only race that Schorr Avon in Kentucky profited him only to the extent of the purse value John W Klein as erratic a thoroughbred as ever lived was the only representative from the Schorr establishment to get down in front and he paid a hatful to straight tickets of 2 denomination They caljcd for something in excess of 50 each On the day that he won Schorr as usual this spring figured several horses iu the race with better chances than his and he let him run un ¬ backed So little confidence did ho have iu him that when Mrs Schorr started to send a messenger to the betting ring with 15 to wager 5 through the board for her that Schorr advised her to save her money which she did didThis This marked the first time in years that the Schorr stable has not been one of the principal money winners as far as purses were concerned However the two best horses in the barn Harry Kclley and Butterscotch II were on the ailing list throughout the spring and neither could be gotten to the post Jas T Clark which started at New Orleans List winter as though he was going to be a strong contender in the threeyearold division fizzled out to nothing He won his initial start in the Crescent City and he gave local turf patrons food for gossip as to his chances in the Kentucky Derby but after his performances this spring he is a sure thing to run in claiming and selling stakes in the east and in Kentucky when the fall season rolls around aroundAs As great as his reverses may be Schorr fortified himself against them by the sale of Cudgel for 30000 last winter At that had he retained the great son of Broomstick Eugenia Bnrcli he no doubt would have won that much in stake money with him thus far this year to say nothing of the wagers he could have won He would still have the horse to take east and he would have been more valuable than ever
