HARD PICKINGS FOR THE KENTUCKIANS Western Horses Racing at the Empire City Track Have to Date Met with Scant Success New York July 22 The Kentucky contingent which lias boen arriving hero for the past week or so to date has cut little figure in the Empire City racing Quietude was responsible for a lively in ¬ terest on the part of the racing crowd earlier in the week but after her miserable failure there was an Inclination to stick to the old favorites which have been racing around New York since the season opened Friday the Kentucklans created a strong market for Night Owl and Bnford but they alone suffered through the double setback as the east ¬ erners would have none of them themPaddock Paddock gossip would indicate that the wiseacres dont look for much better success for the Kentucky horses in the future There are no outstanding can ¬ didates for the richer events and the twoyear old division apparently contains nothing that will take the measure of the foremost eastern young ¬ sters stersKentucky Kentucky seems to be short on goodclass horses this year said one prominent trainer They may send something direct to Saratoga that will cause us to open our eyes but on what we have seen it appears certain the rich Spa stakes will be won chiefly by eastern horses at least both in the two and threeyearold divisions divisionsThe The Saratoga atmosphere may iron out the kinks of some of the older horses that have been per ¬ forming in Kentucky but that is hardly probable The races run by Exterminator Johren War Cloud Jack Hare Jr Cudgel Roamor and one or two others indicates that the western horses will have mighty poor picking pickingWith With youngsters like Elfin Queen Lord Brighton Eternal Terentia Blue Kiddie and Sweep On repre ¬ senting the east honors in the twoyearold division appears just as safe for that section of the country countryWhile While the outlook for Kentuckians in the richer events does not appear to be of the brightest it is almost certain they will win many races at Sara ¬ toga They always have done so in the past E It Bradley has some good performers and the same can be said for several other owners
