LAUREL PARK AUTUMN STAKE PROGRAM TwentyTwo Stakes Feature Events Planned for Meeting in October Over 200000 On Offer Laurel Md August 10 Laurel Park will have New York competition through the first three weeks of the coming October meeting of the Laurel State Fair Coriwration but the Ne v York tracks that race against this popular Maryland course will have to offer attractive purses to woo the best horses and bring out the greatest crowds The Laurel Park program just announced by General Manager Matt Winn provides for twentytwo stakes with a total value of about 40000 and this program is to be sup ¬ plemented by liberal overnight offerings There will be in fact 107 overnight races decided in the course of the twentyseven days and these will have an aggregate value of about KiO000 The grand total ia money that will IK distributed among the horsemen will be between 200000 and 210000 Laurel stakes will close August 24 24It It is possible that the stake program may be amplified by the running of a great special contest for the two greatest horses threeyearolds or four yearolds that may be developed at Saratoga Havre de Grace and Kelmont Park between this and Oc ¬ tober first Last fall after the finish of the race for the Lawrence localization Stakes had demon ¬ strated that Omar Khayyam and Honrless were the most brilliant threeyearolds in the country Colo ¬ nel Winn put up a 10000 purse for a meeting between them at one mile and a quarter at Laurel Park The race that followed attracted to Laurel the greatest crowd that ever witnessed a horse race in Maryland and stirred the country generally To the Maryland State Fairs big purse Edward K McLean of Washington added a beautiful gold vase and the IlourUssOmar Khayyam race was called the John K McLean Cup in memory of the father of the donor of the Cup If there is another cham ¬ pionship special at Laurel Park this coming fall it also will be called the McLean Cup CupRENEWAL RENEWAL OF MANY FEATURES FEATURESThe The stakes that will be renewed at Laurel for horses three years old and over are the National Handicap 2500 added one mile and an eighth Washington Handicap 2000 added one mile and an eighth Baltimore Handicap 2000 added one mile and a sixteenth Dixie Handicap 2000 added one mile and a quarter Anne Aruridel Selling Kace 1500 added one mile and a sixteenth Howard SellingStakes 1501 tn Iidrmilv anda sixteenth and Canvas Back Selling Stakes 1500 added mile and a sixteenth The races for threeyearolds ex ¬ clusively will be the Ellicott City Handicap 2000 added mile and an eighth and the Ciirrollton Handicap 1500 added mile and a sixteenth For horses of all ages these events are offered Liberty Loan Highweight Handicap 1500 added threequarters of a mile Martha Washington Handi ¬ cap fillies and mares 1500 added one mile Blue and Grey Highweight Handicap 1500 added threequarters of a mile Prince Georges Handicap 1500 added one mile Laurel Handicap 1500 added threequarters of a mile Columbus Handi ¬ cap 1500 added threequarters of a mile and Georgetown Handicap 1500 added threequarters of a mile mileLaurel Laurel Parks twoyearold features will be tins Maryland Handicap S2000 added threequarters of a mile Potomac Handicap 2000 added one mile Annapolis Stakes 2000 added threequarters of a mile Blue Point Selling Stakes 1500 added five and a half furlongs There will be two steeple ¬ chase stakes the Koyal Blue Handicap 1500 added about two miles and the Chevy Chusv Handicap 1500 added about two miles and a half halfLast Last winter and spring Laurel Park was used at the suggestion of Colonel Winn as a training place for the engineer corps of the United States army But the soldiers left early in July and Colonel Winn and his helpers are fast getting the pictures ¬ que plant ready for the entertainment of more and better thoroughbreds than ever assembled there in the past The condition of the track has improved considerably and many new stalls have been con ¬ structed
