LUCK PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART How Some of the Star Riders of the Turf Get Their First Opportunity in the Saddle Luk in many cases has played an important part in the development of many of our good jock ¬ eys says a western turf writer Take the case of the crack apprentice riders Karl Saude now one of the leading jockeys on the American turf Sande came to the front in a sensational manner at the winter meeting at Nov Orleans His case looks as though good jockeys are born and not made Sande came to New Orleans last winter from his home in Idaho The previous year he had been exercising horses on the western tracks so he had some experience in riding He sought without success The lad could not secure a job any place when he ran into a groom he had known in the west The groom took the boy to Joe Goodman told him that he be ¬ lieved he would make a good boy ami Goodman put him to work exercising horses The boy soon impressed Goodman by the frets and easy manner in which he handled horses and Goodman signed him to u contract contractNot Not loig after Goodman entered Liberator in a race and put Sande up The lad was unknown and inexperienced but he went to the post with the horse got him away flying and put up as good a ride as a veteran and was beaten only a short head for first money Goodman then continued to ride him on his horses and the boy made good right from the jump and was in demand for the re ¬ mainder of the meeting meetingThere There have been numerous other cases of the best riders being held in the background waiting for an opportunity o get a chance to show what they could really do Among the most notable cases were those of AValter Miller and G rover Cleveland Fuller Itoth of these boys were the premier jock evs of their day Millf was in the employ of Jim McLaughliu and was discharged for incompetent That was before he was given a chance in a race He knocked alHiut from pillar to p0 u and finally James Fitzsiinmon got hold of him and gave him an opportunity to ride The boy went to thf front like a flash and soon was the leading rider in America AmericaHe He held this post for several years The case of Fuller is unite similar He was in the employ of Jack Keene lint he liked the bright lights too well and Keene gof rid of him He had a hard time to land a position but aloug came Archie Zimmer and took him up Ximmer had a f w selling platers around Chicago at the time and Fuller rode many horses and won nearly all the big stakes for a number of years
