PLANS MARYLAND CAMPAIGN J K L Ross Horses Go to Laurel at Close of Saratoga Season Majority of Them Will Be Raced Racedat at Fall Meetings in That State Billy Kelly a Champion By J II Jeffery JefferySaratoga Saratoga X Y August IB The formidable rac ¬ ing establishment of Commander J K L Hoss which has been cutting such a figure all year on eastern tracks will not participate in the fall meetings which have been announced for the Xew York tracks From here the Hoss horses ill i shipped to Maryland to await the cpeuin fall racing season in that state They will lx campaigned at Havre de Grace Laurel Pimlico and Bowie BowieCommander Commander Ross owns a conveniently located farm at Laurel which will be used as headcpiarters for the Maryland campaign It is the plan of trainer H G Bedwell who has done so well with the Iloss horses since they were entrusted tc his care some ¬ thing like a year ago to temporarily retire some few of the big string of twentyeight horses which he has had in training for the Canadian naval of ¬ ficer MarylandThanks when he reaches Maryland Thanks to Bedwells skill both as a conditioner of horses and in patching up cripples most of the Iloss horses have been giving their owner useful service on the race track this year But some of them as is natural require time to recover from ailments growing out of training and racing and when they get back to the farm they will be given every opportunity to recuperate recuperateIt It is learned that Commander Iloss means to make the 1000 acre farm which he owns in the vicinity of Montreal the scene of his principal breeding opera ¬ tions in future There will be located the pick of the choice breeding stock which he is rapidly accum ¬ ulating Commander Iloss believes that it will be found entirely practicable to produce thoroughbreds of the highest class in that locality even though climatic conditions may not be quite so favorable at all seasons of the year as at points farther south southHANDICAPS HANDICAPS CAN BE OVERCOME OVERCOMESuch Such handicaps as there may be on this score can be readily overcome he believes High class horses have been bred and raised at various other points in Canada where climatic conditions are similar and Commander Ross will patriotically en ¬ deavor to demonstrate that It can successfully be done on a pretentious scale in his home section of Canada CanadaOn On the Ross farm in Maryland are four yearlings bred by trainer Bedwell before he sold out all his thoroughbred interests including the farm itself to Commander Iloss as an incidental condition of his engagement as racing manager managerThese These four yearlings already have been broken and will be tried out for speed upon Bedwells arrival in Maryland The process of breaking the with He has speed and gamencss can run equally well in any kind of goingv has shown a remarkable aptitude for carrying high weights and has won his races in a manner indicating that when the distances are stretched out he will not be found wanting He is as sound as a lull and has shown a readiness to stand hard campaigning well as evi ¬ denced by Iiis three successes out of four starts in the twelve days that tho local meeting has been running runningIlcally Ilcally he should have an unbroken record here for everybody agrees that when Star Hampton de ¬ feated him last week it was the fault of jockey Simpson and not that of tho horse lp to that time his only defeat was in the Spring Trial Slakes at Douglas Park Louisville upon which occasion he was so badly injured by a severe kicking at the starting post that it was weeks before his trainer could put a saddle on him It is now generally conceded that he is immeasurably the best twoyear old of the year east or west
