SARATOGAS FINAL WEEK Highly Successful Meeting to Come to a Close Next Saturday Hopeful Stakes of 30000 Big Feature of Wonderful Clos ¬ ing Day Program By J 3J Jcffery JcfferySaratoga Saratoga X Y August 2 i The Saratoga Asso ¬ ciations meeting entered upon its filial week today and everybody here is looking forward to what may follow tlis flos of the reason on Saturday next It has been i highly successful meeting in all re sixcts except the iniMirtiit one of formfnl racing Tlie patronage has surpassed all previous figures fir racing at this ixiint and the sport has Ixen in th main of the most brilliant type which record breaking l erforniances so frequent as a result of the wonderfully fast condition of the reconstructed track that the public has l een kept in a state of constant enthusiasm orer Hie feats of the horses that have been creating new American records here with such regularity Rut for the inconsistent maniifr in which some of the horses notably the lling plater have been racing there would be no fly in the ointment ointmentThe The meeting has clearly established the supremacy of the western gelding Billy Kelly in tiie two yearold division No other twoyearold is even close to him and the general verdict is that it i many a year since a juvenile of his calibre has l it n developed in America But the threeyearold situation is not at all clear There is a distinct division f opinion as to the relative merits of Willis Sharps Kilmers Sun ISriar and Harry Payn Whitneys Johren Subsequent racing may bring developments that will shed further light on the situation and warrant a decision in favor of one ir the other which cannot now fairly be arrived at These two appear to have an edge on the other aspirants for the threeyearold crown crownNeither Neither can it be said that the situation is per ¬ fectly clear in the more mature division of which Commander 1 K L Ross Cudgel and Andrew Millers Roamer are the dominant figures During the early part of the year Cudgel was generally re ¬ garded as the king ISut ICoamers recent achieve ¬ ments have raised a wellgrounded doubt as to the son of Broomsticks superiority At auy rate Cud ¬ gels title is clouded for Roamer succeeded in de ¬ feating him here allxit at some weight concession Cudgels admirers advance the plea that their idol vas not at his best on this occasion ISut Itoainer won decisively and has since earned immortal fanu by running the fastest mile on record in America Perhaps the prospective meeting of the two in the Saratoga tip at one mile and threequarters next Saturday under weightforage conditions will set ¬ tle the matter It surely will be something well worth looking forward to toHURON HURON HANDICAP TODAY TODAYWhile While the Huron Handicap tomorrow and the Adirondack Handicap on Wednesday are important wills vested with more than the ordinary amount of interest tin account of the character of the prospective contestants tile former being expected to bring into action some of the stars of the three yenrold division at one mile and threesixteenths and the latter affording Kill Kelly the opportunity for his farewell appearance here the climax of tlie season will really come on the final day when in addition to tlie Saratoga Tup the Saratoga Stee ¬ plechase and the 30MM Hopeful Stakes for two yearolds the richest event of the whole season will IM run If the track remains fast it will be a wonderful finale to the season for Insides Koamer and Cudgel the Saratoga Cup will be con ¬ tested by such stars as Westy Hogan Sun Briar Joliren and others that have been making turf his ¬ tory of late while tlie Hopeful will be participated in by such promising juveniles as Sweep On Tereii lia Sir ISarton Eternal 1igeon Wing Hannibal and others that have been achieving scarcely less promi ¬ nence nenceNot Not many of the stables racing here will have taken their departure before the close of the meet ¬ ing and it seems likely that tlie fields at Bel mont 1ark which meeting immediately follows this one will be light for tiie first few days Thosi who are planning to race in Maryland and Kentucky are in no particular hurry to leave since there is plenty of time between the close of the racing here and the opening of the fall meetings on both of the circuits named While there may be some little delay in getting away from here no serious trans ¬ portation difficulties are anticipated Most of the stables that are ordinarily seen on the metropolitan circuit will continue to patronize it although some owners of this class are planning to ship to Mary ¬ land and Kentucky as a result of the special in ¬ ducements held out in the way of more remunerative purses It is not thought that tlie sport will par ¬ ticularly suffer however as there are sufficient horses in training for all the tracks that will give the horsemen such a busy and prospect vely profit ¬ able fall campaign campaignTiie Tiie redoubtable Roanior goes from here io Bel inont 1ark where lie has three engagements in the relmont Tark Autumn Handicap at one mile and oneeighth to be run on the opening day Septem ¬ ber 2 tlie Manhattan Handicap one mile on September 9 and the Municipal Handicap one mile and onehalf on September 14 No engagements have Ixen made for Cudgel at Belmont Park and he will not be seen in action until the Maryland season opens Neither has Sun ISriar lieeii nominated for any of the Behnont Park stakes His rival Johren is well provided with Bclmont Park en ¬ gagements including among others the Jerome Han ¬ dicap and the Lawrence Realization for three yearolds
