JOHRENS HURON HANDICAP Gives Hand Grenade Weight and a Beating Without Trouble Favorite Backers Have a Long Deferred Turn Princeps Wins for Hildreth Uy J I Dempsey DempseySaratoga Saratoga N Y August 27 Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Johren seemingly is not to be denied a place at the top of the threeyearold division for he again this afternoon demonstrated his prowess by his easy victory in the Huron Handicap at a mile and threesixteenths worth S2075 net over the only other starter Hand Grenade The winner of this years Suburban and Latonia Derby carried his impost of 126 pounds with great ease made the pace and won in a canter Hand Grenade be ¬ gan slowly and Loftus allowed him to race far back for a time but only momentarily did he threaten the winner when called on and his defeat was thorough after going threequarters Tohrens easy triumph in the race has again renewed the vexed question as to which is the years best threeyearold and though Sun Briar beat him in their last meeting at a weight concession of six pounds in favor of the Kilmer representative Tohrens partisans now claim that he will reverse the decision in their next meeting It is doubtful however if the pair again meet for Sun Briar is scheduled to go against his milerecord of 130 incidentally to take a crack at ICoamers 135 and this will probably prevent him from going to the post in the Sanitoga Cup next Saturday in which Johren is regarded as a certain starter and will have among other opponents the redoubtable Koamer KoamerClose Close finishes and interesting sport were the rule this afternoon and those who placed confidence in favorites fared well for most of the choices suc ¬ ceeded in landing their races racesHeavy Heavy withdrawals from some of the overly entered dashes reduced the fields to comfortable size and it likewise produced more betting activity Jockey activityJockey ICobinson started the favorite backers off well when he managed under his l est riding to get Torchbearer up in the last stride to overhaul Plue Paradise which a sixteenth out appeared a sure winner but the Bradley jinx was again in good working order orderPrinceps Princeps running in S C Hildreths colors and Peerless One were the respective choices in the second race and the McLean representative threat ¬ ened to land the first purse to that establishments credit until about the last sixteenth where he began sulking and allowed Princeps to pass hinr Peerless One did not appear to have a ghost of a show to lose second place but he refused near the end to extend himself and Lazy Lou got up to beat him by a scant head headFIRST FIRST WINNER TOR MAJOR BELMONT BELMONTGeorge George J Longs Wyndover with a change of riders from Connelly to ICobinson was considered the best of the twoyearolds starting in the third nice hut the best she could do was to land in third place Major August Beimont landing his first purse of the meeting when his filly Duchess Lace won by a close margin over the poorly ridden Triumphant TriumphantThe The AVoodland Stock Farm Stable was again un ¬ lucky in the fifth race and the breaking of a stirrup on Benevolent probably deprived him of the purse for he was staunchly supported and about to go into the lead when the mishap occurred and it caused Scherrer to pull him out of contention Deckmate the favorite in this race showed murh soreness when going to tin post and he had a hard time of it to land in third place the winner turning up in Little Nearer which showed an excellent performance and shouldered his 127 pounds in easy style but it took Loftus best riding to keep him in front long enough to beat the fast going Dan DanThe The final race went to Ophelia which was given the call over the other twoyearolds She led practically from the start but had to be ridden hard to outstay Marchesa II and Sea Way WayThe The 159 third money in the Huron Handicap reverted to Toliren as the rule provides in instances where the money is gathered from subscription fees
