SARATOGA WINNERS HARD TO PICK Saratoga X Y August 27 Saratoga has never been an easy spot for the picking of winners and the results of the meeting this year up to date are only in line with the experience of previous years it may be suggested Those who take the laying end of the sport here consistently season after season generally come out with a balance on the right side of the ledger It is not easy to put ones finger on the exact reason that is chiefly re ¬ sponsible for the failure of the public to pick winners more consistently but Jt probably is due to the bald fact that the contention is keener here than elsewhere as a general rule quite as much as to the circumstance that form is so complicated on account of the participation in the races of horses from every section of the country It is agreed that those who succeed best here rely cliiefly upon local form in arriving at their deductions But it takers time to establish local form Horses do so well here as a general rule that they frcimently mislead their trainers as to their fitness and this is a factor in some of the disappointing perform ¬ ances witli which the public has had to contend
