SOMETHING OF CARBINES HISTORY Carbine was foaled in 18S5 at the New Zealand Svivia Park Stud the property of the New Zealand Stud Company D S Wallace owned him when he won the Melbourne Cup Carbine won his first race at Riccarton the wellknown race course at Christ church Canterbury New Zealand ZealandThough Though stakes liave been doubled and in a luimlwr of cases the Sydney Cup for instance and the Australian Jockey Club Derby more than quad ¬ rupled old Carbines figures as stake winner are still the highest by over 35000 and what they would have been bail prizes been equal in his day to what they ire now would have made our other champions look small fry Any horse of the present day that puts up Carbines record would win over 250000 yet the nearest to him is his grandson Trafalgar with 110 5 It is at once conceded that Carbines Melbourne Cup was richer by 20000 thaii it is today but if one takes his two Sydney Cups and compares them with ibe prizes given now it will hiive to lie admitted that a horse of the present day who could win two Sydney Ciqw and a MelN nrne Cup would have a far larger sum to his credit than Carbine had for those three races Svdney Referee
