SOLVING PROBLEM OF KORSE BREEDING Federal Authorities Urged to Make it Profitable for Farmers to Produce Horses Buffalo X Y September 21 Among the en ¬ thusiastic members of the Planters Club which annually holds a horse show in the region of Derby where his Aldworth Farm is located is W H Barr whose wartime and business activities have not dulled his enthusiasm for the halfbred horse both as animalHorses a cavalry remount and a general utility animal Horses of his breeding niofit of them by the Jockey Clubs Breeding Bureau sire Fashion Plate which stood for many years at Major G L Strykers Twin Creeks Farm and which is now located at the Syracuse State Constabulary barracks were con ¬ spicuously successful at the show held on the beauti ¬ ful estate of Hans Schmidt a week ago Vtoa agoVtoa being congratulated on the type of half bred he had produced at Aldworth Farm Mr Barr said saidThe The natural love for a good horse brought me into the breeding industry and it lias become more than a pastime now that the government is clamor ¬ ing for more and better horses There are many members of our little organization who take a lot of pleasure out of horses and incidentally secure the recreation which every man of affairs must have if he is to retain the quality of health which makes for efficiency The Jockey Club in sending us sires like Fashion Plate and Accountant gave the people of Derby and vicinity a good start in the matter of general purpose horse production and you will find that the thoroughbred has many friends in this region which at one time was de ¬ voted almost entirely to the trotter particularly in the days Of C J Hauilin whose Villiage Fa nh was located at East Aurora AuroraThis This trotting blood continued Mr Barr we have found a most valuable asset Importations of much the same strains from Canada have been bene ¬ ficial also and three of my prize winners are out of a granddaughter of General Stauton a son of Hysdyks Hambletonian which came from the Prov ¬ ince of Ontario This mare has thrown me four prize winners to Fashion Plate and there are many others who have had the same experience with the thoroughbred trotting cross crossSHOULD SHOULD ENCOURAGE HORSE SHOWS SHOWSHorse Horse shows like ours resumed Mr Barr am going to promote the horse breeding industry of this country to a marked degree and they should be encouraged in every community Such exhibitions arouse a spirit of friendly rivalry which makes for Progress Every man woman and child in this region can tell you all about the Planters Club and the Derby Horse Show I am sure there is the same local pride In other regions regionsThese These exhibitions help to define type and patrons of the shows will thus establish in their minds the kind of Jiorscs that will be most useful for the all around needs of the people After the war when those of our young men who have been in the cavalry arm of the service return to their homes the horse breeding industry will receive a stimulus Many of them will have acquired a fondness for a good horse who before the war Ijnew little of bis qualities We who can do our part now however cannot postpone the movement until then because right now is the time when the work needs our help most urgently There urgentlyThere are plenty of men like myself said Mr Barr in conclusion who may Be counted upon to breed a certain number of horses yearly What is required is the spirit of cooperation In the ranks of the farmers and horse1 breeders in every commu ¬ nity where horses can be reared advantageously Let the federal authorities mnke it as profitable to produce horses as any other crop and the problem of horse breeding will be solved to everybodys satisfaction
