Performances and Pedigree of One Oneof of the Fastest Two YearOld YearOldFillies Fillies of the Year The filly Ten Rose ranks high among the twoyearolds of 1918 and is distinctly a credit to her young sire Sweep It can scarcely be authoritatively pronounced that she is the host of her age and sex yet it may well be that she is Her speed is beyond dispute hut her ability to carry and win with the high weight penalties which follow success in stake races has yet to he demonstrated So far she has started in fifteen races of which she has won twelve and been second in three This remark ¬ able record has in the main been made in purse racing In fact she has only started twice in stake races in the Tomboy Stakes at Relmont Park in which another good filly Milkmaid defeated her at even weights and the Beldame Stakes at Aqueduct a few days ago which she won with ease It results that her earnings are not up to the measure of her success in racing racingPen Pen Rose made her first essay in racing at Havre de Grace April 24 in a half mile dash Nelle Yorke still a maiden was a 5 to 5 favorite and Pen Rose was third choice at a little better than 5 to 1 Running the distance in 48 she won by a length and a half with Nelle Yorke second and Milda third Subsequent racing showed that her opponents were of little account as racers although one of them St Quentin has shown fairly good form at times At the same track April 29 she won at four and a half furlongs in 55 but only won by threequarters of a length from Nelle Yorke with Tommvwnac third She carried 103 pound in these two races and on this occasion was favorite at 85 to 100 100At At Pimlico May 4 Mrs Kate Leydeckcr afterwards renamed Dottie Vandiver carried 109 pounds to her 95 at four and a half furlongs and gave her a head beating in 55 mainly because Frank Robin ¬ son was on the winner and S McGraw on Pen Rose Thirteen started in this race and Sweeplet finished third May 11 she did better by defeating Agnes Cook Sweeplet and six more at the same distance in 55 J winning by six lengths and carrying 104 pounds May 15 at the same distance and with the same weight up she ran away from Little Mandie Littlecote and three more and won in a canter by four lengths in 55 This ended her satisfactory Pimlico campaign and she was taken to New York There YorkThere at Jamaica May 22 she met her second defeat This was inflicted by the speedy Uncle filly Aunt Dinah which carried 109 pounds to her 94 and beat her by a half length in 102 over a heavy track Pen Rose had some bad luck and after having been bumped and knocked back was gain ¬ ing on the winner at the finish Sylvario ran third and Dottie Vandiver was one of the four unplaced Shi redeemed herself at Belmont Park May 27 when carrying 107 pounds at four and a half furlongs straight she defeated Little Mnudie Lady Vnlcaln and thirteen others in 52 She was the favorite at 8 to 5 and an easy winner by a length and a half For the first time she had up a highly competent jockey in the person of L Lyke At the same track and distance May 31 with the track heavy she won again and with great ease by three lengths in 55 AVise Joan finishing second Wewoka third and eight others running unplaced June 4 she tackled better opponents but the result was the same The race was at fiveeighths straight She carried 110 pounds and Lyke rode her for the second time Showing a superior order of speed she led all the way and won by five lengths in 59 Kiss Again fin ¬ ishing second Sketciiy third and Duchess Lace Polygon Fortunes Favor Keen Jane Dainty Lady and Little Lady finishing unplaced June 7 with 112 pounds same distance she made a now track record in 57Vf and defeated 1igeou Drummond and Mine others in a canter This Stickling a poor third and five more unplaced All hands carried 110 pounds and it was a good race for her and Terentia which may be a crack threeyearold next year yearPen Pen Rose was not raced at the Saratoga meeting and her next appearance in public was at the Bel ¬ mont Park fall meeting September 2 in the newlyinstituted Tomboy Stakes for fillies at five and a half furlongs She was a 3 to 5 favorite but at tiie end of an interesting and closely contested race succumbed to Milkmaid by a half length in such fast time as 104 Uncles Lassie was a poor third six lengths away and Kiss Again was unplaced Weights 107 pounds each It was her first start in a stake race and there is a fair chance that she was not entirely at her best after a months retirement At any rate she made a new American record for fiveeighths straight in her next race This was on September 12 and leading throughout at a tremendous pace she won by a length and a half in 55 Pigeon Wing finishing second and Looking Up third Four ran unplaced Then she went to Aqueduct and made her second and this time successful attempt to capture a stake race This was the Beldame Stakes for fillies at fiveeighths of a mile She was the favorite but Tuscaloosa was expected to give her a race and was a wellbacked second choice A bad start spoiled Tuscaloosas chances but Pen Rose dashed away in the lead and making the pace fast won easily by a length and a half in 59 with Blushing Beauty second and Looking Up third In this race she had up tlie respectable impost of 117 pounds the most she has carried in a race raceInspection Inspection of Pen Roses pedigree discloses that it is sturdily American Singularly so as the pedi ¬ grees of our presentday racers go The closest infusion of foreign blood comes in the third generation back through Pink Dominos dam Belle Rose All through it is a pedigree that can hardly fail to win approbation from Charley Brosstnan and John Madden Pen Rose may do further credit to her
