McCIellands Sweep colt Eternal won the John R McLean Memorial Gold Cup Race which was staged at Laurel this afternoon by the Maryland State Fair Corporation defeating the great Billy Kelly by a head in a great finish There were but two start ¬ ers Pen Rose declining the issue Eternal was ridden by Schuttinger while Sande had the mount on Billy Kelly Both boys were overanxious at the post and broke through the barrier a couple of times When the gate was sprung Billy Kelly hail a Might advantage but appeared to stumble Schut tinger was on the outside and he went right to the front and permitted Eternal to race along at top speed When they reached the halfmile post Eternal had a two and a half lengths advantage which he maintained to the stretch turn Billy Kelly apparently was running well under restraint and when straightened out for the final run gained with every stride At the finish he was going much the faster of the two but failed to get up and was beaten out a good big head The winner and jockey Schuttinger received a great oration from the immense gathering present presentTlie Tlie day was an ideal one for the race weather ind track conditions being all that
