PIMLICO OPENS TOMORROW Famous Old Maryland Course to Be Scene of Wonderful Meeting Stars of the Turf to Strive for Maryland Jockey l plub s Rich Prizes Baltimore Md October 30 Pimlico the famous course of the Maryland Jockey Club the scene of many of the most noted races of the American turf for nearly half century is In complete readiness for the opening of the annual fall meeting on Friday November 1 Never before in the lonjr history of Marylands oldest and most popular racing organization were the prospects brighter fir a wonderful period of racing than they are now on the eve of what is expected to be the greatest of all meetings ever staged at old Pimlico If the founders of tlie Maryland Jockey Club were alive today tiiey would see their fondest hopes realized Pimlico the Mecca of the turf world with Americas best race horses competing for some of the turfs richest prizes The Maryland Jockey Club had its inception at a dinner party at Saratoga in 1868 Racing at the Spa had at that early date attained to such pre ¬ eminence as to attract the attention of lovers of racing the country over and to stimulate iu them trdesire to emulate hi their own localities ila achievements of the Saratoga course courseIt It was only natural that such a feeling1 feeling1should should be developed among wealthy Mary landers for their state shared with Virginia and South Carolina the honor of being the birthplace of American thorough ¬ bred racing The result was the Maryland Jockey Club was organized In honor of the occasion and in remembrance of the particular festivity at which this determination had grown it was decided to inaugurate the contemplated meeting with a sweep ¬ stakes to be called the Dinner Party Stakes to be run in 1870 1870Subsequently Subsequently three additional stakes were opened for the inaugural meeting the Supper Stakes for twoyearolds the Breakfast Stakes for fouryear olds and the Bowie Stakes for all ages at four mile heats heatsDiscussion Discussion was rife during the ensuing two years regarding the result of these events but when the gates of Pimlico were thrown open for the first meeting lovers of the thoroughbred horse from near and far saw Preakness win the Dinner Party Stakes Harry Bassett the Supper Stakes while Glenelg secured the Breakfast Stakes and also added the Bowie Stakes to his prizes prizesORGANIZED ORGANIZED IN YEAS 1870 1870Since Since 1870 the Pimlico course has1 been s the scene of many great races All the noted cham ¬ pions of the American turf have been seen in fierce struggles upon It and for many years it was re ¬ garded as a sort of neutral ground for sectional battles between the east and the west westAnd And now fortyeight years after that memor ¬ able gathering in 1870 old Pimlico will again throw open its gates on Friday for a meeting of eleven days during which period nearly all the presentday stars of the turf will be seen com peting for tho rich prizes offered by the Maryland Jockey Club ClubLast Last spring this oldest Maryland racing orania tion established a precedent in liberality that called fortli encomiums from horsemen and lovers of racing the country over when it divided the Preakness Stakes into two races and added 15000 to each event when its only obliga ¬ tion was to provide one race of that amount In pursuance of that liberal policy the Maryland Jockey riub now offers liorsemen at its fall meet ¬ ing over 100000 in added money for eleven days of racing with no purse of less than 1000 on its program programThe The appreciation of the horsemen is seen in the big entry list to the various stakes and the applications for stable room at Pimlico of all tli best horses in the east still in training trainingSecretary Secretary W P Riggs has made it known that it is the aim of the Maryland Jockey Club to frame conditions for its races that will promote the widest possible distribution of added money and purses among its patrons and suggestions to this end will be gladly received and seriously considered If sub ¬ mitted in writing to the secretary Acting on the belief that no conditions can be framed which will bring horses together upon fairer terms than those of a handicap conscienti ¬ ously made the Maryland Jockey Club has so far as possible eliminated from its program those forms of selling races which have given oppor ¬ tunity for some persons by reason of their greater wealth influence or other advantages to success ¬ fully violate the correct principles governing such races and in lieu thereof offers its patrons a va ¬ riety of Free Selling Handicaps and Claiming Handicaps which it is hoped will afford equality of opportunity to all and special advantages to none noneAnd And it may be added that the program prepared by Secretary Riggs has met with universal satis faction and will provide the highest class of racing
