MAXIM AND GAY RICES TROUBLES New York November 1 The furniture in the Mining Exchange offices of George Grahim Rice Maxim and Jay Rice has been seized and sold for what it would bring bringDistrict District Attorney Swauu is interested in the whereabouts of llicc in so far as he is anxious to know if Rice has left or is about to leave this jurisdiction The Inited States attorney has a similar interest in tlie 111111 Five indictments were found against him by the Brand jury setting in this county last July all for grand larceny in the first degree Two days previously he was arrested by federal agents on a charge of using the mails to defraud defraudRices Rices real name is Jacob S Ilerzijr and he al ready had served two terms in prison when tlie in ¬ dictments were returned against him last July lie is one of the best known getrichquick promoters in the country He was lx rn in this city in 1S70 was sent to Klinira lleformatory when he was 20 was released in 1802 and sent to Sins Sing for forgery in 1895 In 19 jl he set up as a race track tipsier in this city under the firm name of Maxim Gay Co and was highly successful until the government denied his tipping literature tlie use of the mails and closed his offices In 1904 he went to Goldfield and remained in tlie west until 1909 when lift organized It IT Scheftels Co with main offices here and branches in a dozen other cities citiesScheftels Scheftels Co was the most successful of his enterprises but it Avas raided and closed in 1910 and he and his associates were tried on charges of misusing tlie mails After u trial lasting many weeks Kice pleaded guilty and went to IMackwells Island for a year Since his release he had contrived to reengage in business to so flourishing an extent that he numbered his clients by the hundred and paid 3000 a week in salaries to his office force
