EXTREMELY CURIOUS FISHES An example of a remarkable species of fish abund ¬ ant in north Brazil where they frequent mud banks on the coast and in the mouths of the larger1 rivers is the Doubleeye When swimming these fishes frequently go on the surfiice with the eye half in anil half cut of the water and because1 of this curious habit the eyes are divided the upper iwr tion being able to see in the air while the lower is adapted for vision under water That this is really the case is proven by the structure of the lens of the eye In land animals the lens is lenticular and of the shape of two watch crystals put edge to edge while in ordinary fishes which have to see iu a dense medium like water the lens is spherical In the doubleeye fish the portion of the eye which is above the level of the water has the lens lenticular while in that portion which is below the water the lens is spherical In Brazil the flesh of these fish forms an article of food The celebrated blindfisb from the Mammoth Cave iii Kentucky is generally regarded as the typical representative of a family closely allied to the doubleeye This fish which docs not exceed five inches in length bears a close resemblance to the pike All traces of external eyes are wanting and the skin is colorless colorlessThe The Grayling has long been esteemed the ffower of the fish kingdom and no angler who has caught and eaten this rather uncommon fish will for a moment doubt that it is one of the most beautiful In appearance and of the sweetest and most delicate flavor flavorThere There are three closely allied species of gruylings in America and us many more in Europe These fish always inhabit the coldest and clearest waters and their distribution is therefore restricted to tt limited area One species the Arctic grayling is quite abundant in Alaska and in the Mackenzie district of British Columbia A second species is found in Michigan and a third is only found in Montana
