DUCKS SLOW GOING SOUTH A week ago last Sunday the indications were for a severe change in the weather such as would send the ducks scooting south to a warmer clime thaii where hey wenv but the next day the sun came out thp temperature moderated and the ducks found it congenial to remain for a while longer iu the north and those conditions have continued up to the present writing with the exception that after nightfall it has occasionally been somewhat colder but not cold enough to skim over iiti ice the shallowest body of water arid the result is that tlie waterfowl or at least a majority of them have remained somewhat north of the northern boundary otIIlinpis The birds are said to be plentiful in the Dakotas and Minnesota but as they find plenty of feed hiorninjts and evenings they remain during the day m the larger bodies of water and refuse to be decoyed to within gunshot of the sportsmen Tlie conditions are exasperating to sportsmen who are uneasily waiting for a few days duck shooting but to worry and fret will not help the matter any as we must all wait until there is a sudden change in the temperature and a cold rain comes before thebirds will o south in any considerable numbers Some Chicago duck shooters think the big forest firest in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago caused the birds to change their course of flight south ¬ ward and that Illinois shooters will not have any good duck shooting tills autumn but 1n this belief we do not fully agree wth them arid hold to the idea that as soon as a severe change in the weather occurs there will be good duck shooting all dowii tlie Illindls River though it is possible that the birds being late in starting from their northern re ¬ sorts may shorten their stay in the Illinois waters and thus deprive the Illinois shooters of much of the sixirtTthey have anticipated Some ducks were mov ¬ ing a week ago today but the weaOicr was KO mild that they were in no hurry to continue their journey to the giilf American Field
