ONTARIO IS FACING A HORSE FAMINE Nearly Every County in Province Shows Alarming Beduction in Service Stallions Toronto Out November 22 The province of Ontario is facing a horse famine famineThe The number of stallions enrolled for service in Ontario in 1913 was 2700 This year the number similarly enrolled is only 1993 The number en ¬ rolled in 19M was greater than for the previous year but every year since 1914 has shown a de ¬ crease Most of the reduction is due to the gradual elimi ¬ nation of grade stallions These have fallen from 933 in 1913 to 458 this year a reduction of 535 But there has been a reduction iu purebreds as well from 17G7 to 1535 a drop of 232 232Every Every county in Ontario with one exception shows a reduction in the total number of stallions for service In Middlesex a noted horse center there has been a drop from 128 to 73 while the county has gone down from 119 to 101 101It It is probable that a good deal of the total reduc ¬ tion noted is due to continued selling to the west coupled with curtailment in importations from the United Kingdom as a result of the war Only 66 stallions of all breeds were imported from Eng ¬ land lust year by Canadian breeders But what ¬ ever the cause it is plainly evident that this prov ¬ ince is face to face with a serious shortage of horses for breeding purposes
