REMARKABLE GAINS IN RETURNS TO WINNING WINNINGOWNERS OWNERS FROM THE TRACKS IN THE THESTATE STATE OF MARYLAND Considered is a field of racing the Maryland tracks returned owners 49938 more this year than they did in 1917 This is an extremely good showing in view of the fact that the influenza epidemic curtailed the returns from the Laurel meeting to the probable extent of at least 100000 However there was a substantial increase over 1917 at Pimlico Havre de Grace and Bowie the allaround result being an output of money never before equaled in the history of Maryland racing The 705078 of 191S contrasts pleasantly with the 355050 of 1913 the gain of over a hundred per cent in six years being largely due to the Maryland Jockey Club which from being one of the most conservative racing organiza ¬ tions of the country suddenly about faced and became one of the most liberal and progressive Laurel produced more per diem but the Pimlico daily average of 985758 for twentysix days of racing was remarkably good and an increase of more than 2000 per day over 1917 There is already assurance that these handsome figures are to be exceeded in 1919 a 25000 Preakness Stakes being a factor Particulars immediate and comparative of the flourishing state of racing in Maryland are given in the following Track and Meeting Laurel 100 184 107460 51 Pimlico Spring Meeting 109 197 134140 32
