LEADER AMONG ENGLANDS TRAINERS luck of Alec Taylor in Having Owners of Crack Racers as His Patrons at Manton If not novel it was not the less a pleasant ex ¬ perience for Alec Taylor once more to top the list of successful trainers with a total of 183370 in stakes not including place money This is more than double his aggregate for last year when he occupied the same position and the figures are really remarkable considering the limitations en ¬ forced by the government and would have been swelled to a large extent in normal times Lady James Douglas takes a large proportion of this stake money but Manton is exceptionally fortunate in its patrons who include Major W Astor M Calmann Mr Cazalet Mr A W Cox Mr W M G Singer and Mr J B Thorneycroft all of whom are home breeders on the highest class lines and it is furthermore something to be proud of that the names of four of his employers figure in the first half dozen Mr W M Cazalet comes out the best after Lady Douglas with five winners of twelve races the principal of which was Prince Chimay which won three of even engagements including the Jockey Club Stakes when he startled us all by beating Gainsborough for which however as previ ¬ ously explained there were extenuating circum ¬ stances His first bracket was earned in the Wind ¬ sor Stakes when he easily accounted for his stable companion Queens Square But it was his fine per ¬ formance in the Silverley Handicap which led up to the impression that he was something out of the common and a fine stayer though it is I believe a fact that no one connected with the stable ever dreamed that the time was at hand when he would lower the colors of its champion threeyearold with which he does not bear comparison in appear ¬ ance although another good horse to the credit of the successful sire Chaucer ChaucerPRINCE PRINCE CHIMAY AND AIR RAID RAIDThat That Prince Chimay would have won the Cesare witch without his ten pounds penalty is highly probable but Mr Cazalet was fortunate in possess ¬ ing Air Raid which if less fancied than fiis stable companion Haki nevertheless proved equal to the occasion and thanks in great degree to the mag ¬ nificent effort of the veteran but virile Madden snatched the verdict in the last stride absolutely Beyond question Prince Chimay is a great natural stayer like many of the progeny of his St Simon sire aild given the opportunity he will show it next year for there is still room for possibly more than average winter improvement in him The same remark is justified in the case of the well grown Air Raid which is a worthy successbr to his sire the record winner of the Cesarewitch which by the way was also credited to the Mauton stable by Aventuriere in the old mans time awl again by Grey Tick but as far as I can remember the Cambridgeshire has hitherto eluded the attempts of the Taylor family 1laxtol knew too much to be reliable and was a disappointing beast and to a certain extent also the gray twoyearold Sphinx halfsister to Air Raid but as far as I know she is game enough aiid may be noted as one that will pay for following next season M Calmann had a lean time with his little band as Haki could never be relied on to do his best Baupaume must I fear be included in the same category and Brisque has failed signally to realize her early promise which after all did not amount to much muchA A W COXS SEASON SEASONA A W Cox whose nom de course Mr Fairis under which lie achieved so many important suc ¬ cesses is almost forgotten since the change did not carry with it any alteration in his colors cannot complain that his good fortune has forsaken him even though the contemplated program with his champion Gay Crusader had to be abandoned owing to the exigencies of training but there should IKJ a great and profitable career before him and the prospect will assuredly not be prejudiced by rest and the extra twelve mouths in age indeed it should lie all ill his favor Though it was not my opinion at the time it may be that My Dear was flnkily beaten by Ferry for the One Thousand Guineas anyway that form has been turned upside down Since and it rs certain that whereas the one has depreciated and possibly is not too liberally endowed with pluck the other has come on with giant strides To compensate for that disappoint ¬ ment Mr Cox had a fine turn in Fortunes wheel when after having been easily lieuteii by Stony Ford undoubtedly the better mare of the two then no matter what might in more fortuitous circum ¬ stances have happened afterward My Dear was awarded the Oaks as the result of an objection for bumping which did not acutally interfere with the judges award but was justified by the breach in the rules of racing without the strict observation of which it would be quite impossible to carry on All the same it was a lucky chance which gave to Mr Cox and completed for him the full list of threeyearold classic victories victoriesTWO TWO FINE FHXIES FHXIESAfter After that My Dear which is the most important winner so faf sired by Beppo and only the second foal of Silesia had a good time checked only by her failure to beat Gainsborough in the September Stakes as she gave a Stone and a hollow beating to Freesia in the Midsummer Stakes easily annexed the Triennial Produte Stakes made short work of Dansellon Diadem and Prince Chimay and com ¬ pleted a useful season by winning the Lowther Stakes All the time it was reported that Mr Cox had another filly nearly if not quite as good in Queens Square and if this lacked confirmation during the earlier part of the season when her best show was to beat Corso in winning the Cavenham Plate she asserted herself in the wiudingup stages by winning the Newmarket Oaks before a far more Club Cup in which she defeated her stable com ¬ panions Prince Chimay and the tailedoff St Eloi Deep Sea had a blank season and is probably not of much account but I should hesitate to dismiss thus cursorily Mr Coxs twoyearolds for al ¬ though still maiden they have had few opportuni ¬ ties and have shown tip pretty well in good com ¬ pany added to which they ar exceedingly wc n bred Manilardo being a brother to liv Crusader while Baal Gad is by Rayardo Jubilee Ciccron uittsi is an unknown quantity iiot having jft run in iublic but she is by Cicero Sihsia and it is some recommendation to be halfsister to My Dear DearMAJOR MAJOR ASTORS TRIO TRIOWith With limited opportunities Major Astor may be said to have done well having won with each of the three horses that have ruti for him Blink was not quite up to classic form though not far behind At the outset after losing ground at starting he finished third for the Two Thousand Guineas and went ono better in the Derby when second and tlicn had jrn easy task to beat such as Sir Berkeley and Nubian in the Princess of Wales Stakes Something went wrong with him after that and nothing more was seen of him but un ¬ questionably ho is avf ihe horse and if he stands training again will burely figure prominently nest year Two promising youngsters were exploited in Biichan and Lord Basil the former a shapely colt first foal by Sunstar Uamoaze that won hit first three races and afterward ran exceedingly well though beaten under his penalty for the Clearwcll and Criterion Stakes and the latter a goodlooking halfbrother to Magpie that opened his account auspiciously by winning the Jiuckenham Stakes but was overmatched to give weight away to Stefan the Great Knight of Blyth and Dominion in the Middle Park Plate his only other essay Both these youngsters may be marked as likely to distinguish themselves in classic company next year the former especially so Vigilant in Lon don Sportsman
