SHELDRAKES MATERNAL VERSATILITY One of Sir Basil Montgomery rabbit catchers latelv. took ten sheldrakes eggs which he found In a rajibit hole on an island on Loch Leven, Scotland, and put them under a hen. Eight of them hatched out, but when they were about three weeks old the hen disappeared and could not be found for several hours. In the evening she turned up with fourteen young partridges which she had annexed. She mothered the ducks as well as the partridges, but "did not like the ducks," and six of them died. She -theii had a family of two ducks and twelve partridges, which she was bringing up when last heard of.
