col mAttwinn arrives in new york! Says Churchill Downs Can Be Bought by Kentucky Syndicate if Price Is Met. NEW YORK, N. Y., January 15. Matt J. Winn, manager of the Churchill Downs track in Louisville, is one of the late arrivals here from Kentucky. Manager Winn reports that the merger of Kentucky tracks still hangs fire, but that negotiations are well under way and something definitely will be shortly announced. .As far as Churchill Downs is concerned, the New Louisville Jockey Club is willing to sell out, said Mr. Winn, if the price asked is met. "We set our price on Churchill Downs," said Colonel Winn, "and the owners of this track will le willing to sell out if the horsemen want to buy the plant. We are all willing to do anything that will further the sport of racing in the Blue Grass State, which so long lias been identified with racing, both from the sport itself and through the breeding industry. Whether there will be any trade or not I cannot say. It did look to me, while I was in Kentucky, as- if the syndicate might certainly take over the Douglas Park and Latonia tracks, along with the Lexington course. We have set our price on Churchill Downs and it remains for them to accept it or leave it. It might be the best tiling for racing in the State of Kentucky for all the horsemen and breeders of the state to own all the tracks. Personally, I certainly am in favor of anvthing that will be for the good of racing and the thoroughbred horse. I started in the rehabilitation of the Churchill Downs track with the New Louisville Jockev Club seventeen years ago, and have been in the management since that time. The track lias prospered from year to year, and I want to see it go on prospering. If tiie horsemen and breeders of Kentucky can own the track ami make the sport prosper I am willing for them to have all the tracks, Churchill Downs included." .
