: : REVERSAL IN THE FORTUNES OF W. VIAU BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE SINGULAR FAILURES OF OMAR KHAYYAM AND WESTY HOGAN i When Wilfrid Viaus stable of 1917 was sent into winter quarters it numbered two quite remarkable race horses among its components, horses of great speed, demonstrated ability to carry high weight successfully and to stay over a long route. Apparently Omar Khayyam and Westy Hogan could hardly fail to rank high among the stake winning horses of 1918, yet fail they did. What was the matter with Omar Khayyam no one could tell, yet he was miles away from the superb form of his career as a three-year-old. He looked well, worked satisfactorily and ate heartily, but raced badly, in comparison with his 1917 form. With Westy Hogan it was different. In such racing as he did he manifested the retention of his wonderful speed, but was beset by some leg infirmity that prevented his doing justice to himself and enforced a limited term of racing. It was due to the almost tragic downfall of these tine horses that the Viau stable income for 191S of 2,307 contrasts glaringly with its 2,02S of 1917. The record of the stable was: Horse.
