IMPROVEMENT AT HAVANA Bright Sunshine Works Wonders with the Oriental Park Track. . " Chillum and Solid Rock Furnish an Interesting Duel in. the... , Fifth Race. HAVANA. Cuba, February 11. The warm, bright sunshine of yesterday and today worked wonders to the track at Oriental Park, so much so that todays racing was run over a course that was almost fast. The ideal weather also played its part in bringing out an unusually large crowd, which witnessed some good contests, resulting in exciting finishes. This was particularly true in the fifth race, a dasli of a mile and a sixteenth, in which R. R. Allens Chillum came from third place at the head of the stretch to snatch victory by a nose from Solid Rock. Lunsford set the pace with Solid Rock, pressed by Little Russ until the far turn was reached, where Solid Rock shook off, Little Russ and appeared to have thejraceat" his mercy. At tiie head of the stretch Solid Rock had a lead of two lengths, but Rullmun brought Chillum with a rush and the pair were locked throughout the last eighth, Chillum getting the decision. , Jockey Fator rode his first winner when he landed Tippo Sahib a winner in the second race. Tippo Sahib was at 15 to 1 in the betting and beat Chemung by a half length in a driving finish after showing the way throughout. Another close" finish came with the running of the third race, Appleton. Wiske and Anlacer hftoking nn hi to a stubbornly" cohtesteds"tretcir""duel, the out- come of which was in doubt until the winning line was crossed, the former prevailing by a, neck. Mabel Trask was a big; disappointment in this race, quitting early. Lucky Pearl, from K. Spenees stable, accounted for the opening dash, meeting ,nq serious . opposition after passing into the lead after rounding the far turn. The final race of the afternoon resulted in another spirited finish, Attorney Muir outlasting Frank Keogh after Lola quitin the stretch. Sir Wellons. the property .of the Cuban-owned Armonla Stable, .-whlchj pulled, up in the Marianao Handicap last Sunday, broke his coffinbone and had to be destroyed.
