t " 1 RECORD DP A NEWSPAPER MANS STABLE WHICH INCLUDED LEOCHARES AND THE PORTER IN ITS LIST OF INMATES : . : i Edward B. McLean of Washington, owner of two great daily newspapers and man of vast wealth, embarked in racing in recent years without, as yet, reaping a measure of success commensurate with his lavish outlay in the purchase of horses,, developed and undeveloped. From the latter class came his ; two-year-olds of last year and, barring the filly Bon Jour, they were distinctly disappointing. However, he had some compensations. His veteran sprinter Leochares was still a horse to be reckoned with ; when opposed by the best aiid raced to such good effect as to gain inclusion in the list of winners of 0,000 or more. Then Jn The Porter he possessed a three-year-old colt right- up in the first flight of the I year, exceedingly fast, a weight carrier of high degree and not as fortunate as he was good. If he does i not gain fame as a handicap horse this year it will be a strange circumstance. Bon Jour proved herself a downright good filly. She only started five times, won twice, was second twice and third once, one of her victories being in the long-established Clipsetta Stakes at Latonia. In ail, the stable record was: Horse.
