JUDGE PRICE TO SERVE AT LEXINGTON Will Be Presiding Steward at All Kentucky Tracks Brief Resume of His Long and Noted Career LOUISVILLE Ky April 23 Judge Charles F Price looking the picture of health returned here yesterday after several months at Naples Fla fully prepared to take up his duties as presiding steward on the three Kentucky tracks Since his arrival it has transpired that the reappoihtnlrnt of judge Price to the position he has held for many years Included Lexington as well as Churchill Downs and Latonia In the list of officials original ¬ ly named by resident manager Robert L Baker of the Lexington track the name of Judge Price was missing and this led to the belief that he would not serve at that meeting Of late years judge Price has not acted in an official capacity at Lexington He leaves this morning for that city to be on hand for tiie opening of the meeting meetingIn In continuous and active service judge Price is the oldest racing judge in America today He has been over thirtytwo years in the stand during which time he has judged over 32000 races His turf career as an official began in 188G under the late Col M Lewis Clark at Churchill Downs Prior to that he was engaged in newspaper work at the time of his departure therefrom being city editor of the Louisville Post Upon the death of Major B G Bruce he succeeded him as secretary of the old Louisville Jockey Club This position and as assistant judge with Col Clark he held for a number of years Upon the death of Col Clark judge Price succeeded him as presiding judge at Churchill Downs For twentyseven years he has been in the stand at Latonja and has presided at Douglas Park almost from its beginning He was also in the stand at Lexington for a numl er of years He has also been presiding judge at Oak ¬ land Tanforan and Sacramento in California at Highland Park in Detroit at Windsor and Fort Erie in Canada at Nashville Tenn Juarez Mex oico and other courses coursesProbably Probably no man is more familiar with turf law He was identified with the American Turf Congress founded in 1891 the oldest or first turf governing body in the west Many of the turf rules of the present day were formulated by the late Col Clark Col L P Tarlton and judge Price He has been associated in the stand with many of the most noted turf officials of the past Col Clark John Carter Col Tarlton Capt Jas H Rees and others Judge Price has always been noted as an honest and upright official and is fortunately endowed with a judicial mind a quality that is most essential in passing upon the acts of other men
