AN AUSPICIOUS BEGINNING Lexington Meeting Starts off with Every Indication of Success Several Derby Candidates Bace Bacewith with Linden Legotal and St StBernard Bernard Showing Best LEXINGTON Ky April 124 The Kentucky Jockey Club began its existence under conditions most flattering for its future and likewise for tlie sport for never before has a bigger or more repre ¬ sentative assemblage witnessed the opening of racing here than that which was on hand this afternoon All records for attendance at the track was surpassed long before the bugle called the horses to the post in the initial race and the steady srream of further arrivals exhausted admission tickets and drow heavily on the reserve Despite preparations that were counted on to be ample Avith a ten per cent increase over the best former day being provided for the programs were sold out and fully twenty five hundred additional ones could have been used If todays showing is a true augury of the interest in racing in this locality then it can l e safely predicted that the meetings at Louisville and Latonia will surpass any former ones held there Governor Stanley and his party were early ar ¬ rivals and the chief executive of the state took his usual keen interest in the racing and attending incidents After the finish of the Phoenix Hotel Handicap which featured the card Governor Stan ¬ ley presented to owner W F Poison the handsome cup donated by the Phoenix Hotel and which went to the winner in addition to a purse of 900 Pol son was represented in the race by Kuford on which the unknown C Howard had thambunt He showed good riding ability and won from Jiffy and Viva America Tlie latter was a pronounced favorite and her defeat was in the main due U her lack of racing condition to go a inile and seventy yards Her race this afternoon will be beneficial and she should have no difficulty in reversing todays de ¬ cision with the winner in their next meeting Upsets meetingUpsets were frequent during the afternoon niwl began when Jock Scot backed to the exclusion of all other starters brought ny last after never having shown a particle of the high speed that would make him a factor Jefferson Livingstons veteran Prince of Como showed a sterling per ¬ formance and dazzling speed to lead by a wide margin for the entire nice and win in a canter canterThe The Livingston colors were again triumphant in the third race contested by a speedy band of fil ¬ lies including Regalo Legotal Passing Shower and others but Lillian Shaw took them all into camp and won in game style though her victory might have been a lucky one and aided to some extent by the somewhat inferior ride that Murphy gave Kegalo The latter landed second and Legotal headed the others Regalo was the pronounced choice and her defeat was a costly one to her many backers backersSennings Sennings Park was another highly regarded one that failed badly and in his case poor riding was again largely lesjxmsible for his poor showing Howard managed to get him into a bad jam on the first turn St Kernard turned up the winner of thu race with Stockwell in third place St Bernards performance was a really good one and it qualifies him for consideraton in the Kentucky Derby DerbyFRIZ FRIZ WINS TWOYEAROLD RACE Friz a disappointment last winter in New Or ¬ leans scored a victory in the twoyearold dash for colts in the second race His fast l cginning enabled him to race into a long lead at the outset and he won easily for the entire way Mighty Man a good looker landed in second place and Aziz just managed to outstay the others for the shorter portion of the purse The purseThe twoyearold nice for fillies went to Anna Jackson in a spectacular finish with Drumfire sec ¬ ond and Mysterious Girl third thirdThe The filial nice was another thriller Merchant getting up in tlie last stride to down Ernest 15 with Sands of Pleasure coming third Governor James Cox intends to witness the running of the Kentucky Derby and has had re ¬ served for him one of the choice boxes at Churchill Downs Harry Payne Whitney has sent a request that three Imxes be reserved for him and a party of friends that he intends to bring
