AN OFF DAY AT LEXINGTptl Nearly All the Races Given Over to the Platers Expensive Colt Westwood Proves a Failure in His First At ¬ tempt Track Talk LEXIXGTOX Ky May 2 Due to the severe track conditions todays racing offering was de cidedly featureless and contested in most instance by racers of the cheapest variety The sport itself presented nothing to enthuse over and with the ex ¬ ception of the finish in the feature race which wus close all the others were of the straggling variety with the winners coming to the finish with n posi ¬ tive advantage advantageSome Some of the results were surprising and favorites were bowled over repeatedly The most pronounced disappointment of the afternoon developed with the running of the second race when Harry Perkins recently acquired and high pricQd Nevada wonder Westwood failed badly and brought up iiP tliird place In view of the fact that the colt has shown sensationally in trials it was expected that he would run away from the opposition he had an they consisted of maidens but he was decisively beaten by St Germain and Virgo There was nothing particularly brilliant or impressive about his performance though he was green at the bar ¬ rier and during the running At only one stage of the race did he threaten seriously That was as the leaders consisting of Virgo and St Germain wen rounding into the stretch Westwood at this point was following them fairly close up and appeared as if he would dispose of them readily in the stretch but when called on hard he fell back and left St Germain to dispose of Virgo and win easily Probably1 easilyProbably1 the worst field that will bo mustered in Kentucky this season made the contest in the opening race and it resulted in a Victory for Corydon slightly favored in the betting St Tude landing second place and Ambuscade third The third race was little better in point o class of the horses than the thev v opener aiid enabled Cantil6ver to win from Gourmand and Handhlue the oddson favorite Stevenson quitting badly after he had threatened a runaway victory Fern Hundley was probably best in tle fourth race a handicap under claiming conditions at three quarters but the diminutive T Hurray was not strong enough to do the filly justice causing her to be beaten by Port Light on which Garner rode one of his best races racesPonderosa Ponderosa carrying J Livingstons colors was backed in confident style in the fith race but the finish found him far back War Tax winning with Parking in second place and Thirteen securing the shorter portion of the purse pursePOP POP EYES BEATS THE FAVORITE FAVORITEAnother Another jolt was given the backers when Viola Park and Emma Weller both winners in their previous starts were beaten easily by Pop Eyes which showed a high order of speed from the start and led by a wide margin throughout Ziziz land ¬ ing second with Knima Weller following The program hook comprising the first eight days of racing at Churchill Downs was distributed to owners here and called for the commendatory re ¬ marks The purse offerings for this season ex ¬ ceed the best former offering at this track Tiy over 50 per cent There will 1m 27500 distributed iii purses and stakes on Derby day dayJockey Jockey W Median was suspended for four days by the starter in the third race raceJames James W McClelland was among todays visitors at the track and exnressed confidence that his Eternal would land tlie Kentucky Derby He has decided to send Sailor which he acquired from Hobert McKeever at Hot Springs to the post also In the big event Schuttinger will have the mount on Eternal but the owner has not decided ou a rider for Sailor Advice from the east are that responsible New York layers are at nresent quoting Eternal at 3 to 1 play or pay This quotation is regarded as somewhat short considering the exacting conditions and the fact jtliit nearly all the cracks to go in the race are practically on the scene and awaiting the bugle call callJoseph Joseph E Seagram is trying to Secure the services of jockey C Robinson to ride one of his repre ¬ sentatives in the Kings Plate to be run at the Woodbine Toronto track May 24 It Is unlikely that the rider will he secured securedBecause Because of being eneligible to start in the race Lucile P was ordered withdrawn by the stewards at the last minute from the opening race Gallaher raceGallaher Bros report a new arrival at their farm this morning a bay filly by Tack Atkin Itoyiil CombsP Captive and a sister to Sewell Combs P T Chiiin who races his horses under the nom de course of the Kentucky Stable was among to ¬ days visitors His horses have been shipped tit New York where they will engage in the racing there Mr Cliinn will remain in these parts for some time
