FAVORITES PROVE FICKLE Lexington Choices Give the Ad ¬ mirers a Disastrous Afternoon Harvest King an Especial Of ¬ fender Pif Jr Beaten in His First Race of the Year LEXINGTON Ky May 5 Backers of choices experienced disaster during the afternoon when most of the favorites succumbed readily in un ¬ expected fashion the mile and an eighth handicap intended as the feature bringing with it the most disappointing incident by the failure of Harvest King On the strength of his previous showing when he finished third in good company under a somewhat inefficient ride on the part of Barrett he was considered to have the purse this afternoon at his mercy and was backed ir confident style but he proved a failure and his defeat was fore ¬ shadowed long before the stretch racing began Barrett was in a great measure responsible for his poor showing as lie kept him under choking re ¬ straint for threequarters and the horse was com ¬ pletely exhausted when he was called on The winner turned up in Omond on which C Robinson rode 11 perfect race and coming with a welltimed rush wore Hocnir down in the last sixteenth Herald landed In third place Another jolt that the followers of favorites got Kline In the mile dash in which the veteran Pif Jr making his first start of the year went down to defeat as a result of a poor ride M Garner was the offender in this instance and his riding of the Baker starter came in for considerable criticism Garner tried to account for his failure by going into the stewards stand and complaining that Murphy on Manokin had repeatedly interfered with his mount The winner in this was Buford which just managed to last long enough to win by a neck Trusty which had been winning con ¬ sistently of late met defeat in the initial pice Brig of War triumphing
