AUSTRIAN RACING DURING THE WAR Sport Never Ceased Whilo Murderous Fighting Was On in Europe AVriting in the London Evening News W A Barry the exchampion sculler says he lived in Budapest throughout the war and was never in ¬ terfered with His letter says Sport saysSport began to boom In Austria directly the war broke out and more money than ever was spent on horse racing The prices of bloodstock began to increase and even in 1918 at the yearling sales stock was fetching record prices up to 15000 and 20000 20000There There were many English trainers and jockeys there and they nil carried on their work during the war without any interruption whatever AVhere a trainer before the war received 50 a month for looking after a horse he now gets 200 200Among Among the trainers are three sons of the well known trainer Joe Butters of Newmarket Frank Fred and Oliver The two latter actually re ¬ ceived their licenses as trainers from the Hungarian Jockey Club during the war warFred Fred trains jumpers for Baron Rothschild Oliver trains for Mr Oburn of Aieuna while Frank trains for Mr Mautner of AMenna AMennaJohn John Reeves the trainer of Baron Rothschilds flat racers celebrated his jubilee last year fifty years in Hungary as trainer The Hungarian Jockey Club gave him a dinner and presented him with a magnificent silver cup and invited every English trainer and jockey witli their wives Count Bat thyany nephew of the famous Prince Battliyany who raced for many years in England and Count Segrey presided at this dinner dinnerThe The last four Vienna Derbys were won by horses trained by English trainers Boh Adams son of Jim Adams of Epsom trained Tovabb owned by Mr Dreber in 1915 John Reeves trained Baron Rothschilds Sanskrit in 1910 Frank Butters trained Mr von Mautners Sangarnnaro in 1917 and Oliver Butters trained Mr Oburns Reichano a Dark Ron ¬ ald filly ia 1918
