LAWN I A DERBY Seven Colts and One Filly in the Field for Its Thirtyseventh Running Eternal to Be the Outstand f fing ing Choice for the Race The Latonia Derby will have its thirtyseventh running today It is the only Derby run in this country in which he contestants are required to cover the correct Derby distance of a mile and a half Its added value of 15000 makes it an event to be keenly coveted It was for a time thought that Sir Barton or Billy Kelly would be sent west to compete for it but that enterprise seems to have been abandoned by Commander Ross This circumstance while in a sense depriving the race of an interesting clement tends to make it a more open affair and portends a greater number of starters than would have been the case had either of these equine stars been sent to Latonia In a way the sending west of the fast threeyearolds Eternal and Be Frank is some compensation compensationRacing Racing at Latonia is under the eastern scale of weights but the Derby closed for entries before the Kentucky State Racing Commission wisely changed to the eastern scale There ¬ fore the Derby will be run under the old scale of 122 pounds for colts 119 pounds for geldings and 117 pounds for fillies Vulcanite appears to be the only probable starter for which the maiden poundsGreat allowance of seven pounds can be claimed so if he goes his weight will be 115 pounds Great horses have won the Latonia Derby the names of Leonatus Bersan Los Angeles Kingman Halm a Ben Brush Ornament Lieutenant Gibson Sir Huon Olambala Governor Grayr Free Lance Royal JIr Iqdge LibertyvLoaaand Johrcn illuminating = itir hisfejrjv That history showsthat a mile and a half has no terrors for the American thoroughbred and it is in that identical race that the long standing record of Goodrich for the distance will be wiped out some day Governor Gray John Gund and Liberty Loan came so near to doing it in their years as to show that all that is necessary is for some one of their speed and high class to be forced to do its best from start to finish Possibly the new record may come this year Weather Probabilities Clear Track Past PastBreeding Horse HorseEternal Breeding Latonia Derby starters except Eternal were given much consideration in connection with the Kentucky Derby but the difference between running a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half brings unexpected revelations and precious few Kentucky Derby winners have subsequently won the Latonia Derby the list being confined to Leonatus Kingman Halma Ben Brush Lieutenant Gibson and Sir Huon stars in racing every one of them Experience abroad runs in the same line Winners of the Two Thousand Guineas have failed over the longer Epsom Derby route and Derby winners have failed strikingly when asked to traverse the still longer St Leger distance The case of The Panther in being unplaced in the Derby last Wednesday after having won the Two Thousand brilliantly is a fresh illustration illustrationThere There is no manner of doubt that Eternal will go to the post the favorite He was either the best or the second best twoyearold of last year as well as being the leading woneywin ning horse of any age His racing this year has proved nothing except that Sir Barton is his master He was badly beaten in the Kentucky Derby but that may have been in great part due to the state of the going Since then he has partially redeemed his reputation by finishing second to Sir Barton in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico and in the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park Sir Barton vanquished him easily in both of these races but in the two he just as easily defeated such threeyearolds as Sweep On King Plaudit Over There Ilout hdge Vulcanite Milkmaid Vindex Dunboyne Drummond Yurucari Pastoral Swain Star Hampton Sweepment and Grimalkin Bqth of these races were run over fast tracks and had Sir Barton not been in the way Eternal would have won them both This is a weighty point It justifies his favoritism favoritismThe The matter of doubt is whether he will stay a mile and a half if put under severe pres ¬ sure A good many turfmen of experience think he will not But there is no evidence on the point and anything that may be said of him in that regard can with as much propriety be said DerbyOf of the other seven named to meet him in the Latonia Derby Of the others Rcgalo is really the only one which has done anything notable in racing this year Her victory in the Blue Grass Stakes at Lexington was achieved in a remarkably good race In it she beat the colts Under Fire Sennings Park American Ace Stockwell and Vulcanite and the gelding St Bernard with the utmost ease in fast time But she was cut down while running in the Kentucky Derby and thrown back badly in condition She has iiot been able since to run back to the superior form of her Blue Grass Stakes race but showed returning speed in the Kentucky Oaks OaksThe The other six appear to be improving with racing and Clermont has the fastest trial at Latonia to his credit faster than Eternals and as easily made Be Franks public trial was in running Corn Tassel to a neck at Jerome Park at a mile and a sixteenth in new track record time It was a capital race in which he was giving the winner weight and he may l le e hard to beat if he stays the route in good style The other four are running on hope and the pluck of their owners is admirable admirableThe The following table shows the races and money won by the horses carded to start in the Derby Scale Wtv Performances to Date Horse Col and Sex Wt Jockey On Off
