VICIOUS ELK RUINS A HERD The herd of elk on the famous Montour County game preserve of Alex Billmeyer at Washiiigton ville Pa has been reduced in number from twenty to u dozen within the past few days some of his finest specimens having fallen prey to the vicious ness and murderous instincts of the patriarch of the herd which has et out to kill everything of its kind that belongs to the male sex The big bull which weighs over 1100 pounds and whose antlers are over four feet ten inches in length has been on the rampage for several weeks The last mem ¬ ber if the herd to fall before the remorseless on ¬ slaught of the king was the next to the largest elk on the preserve which weighed over a thousand pounds The battle which is described by Mr Bill ¬ meyer was one of the most thrilling and terrifying encounters he ever yitnessed between wild animals lid lasted an hour Neither of the big animals ieined to have an advantage until at an opportune moment the patriarch seemed to catch the younger elk in an unguarded position and rammed him against n tree Then it was all over in a second The younger bull dropped to the earth one of the prongs of the attacking elk having pierced the younger animals heart
