LATONIA MEETING RECORDBREAKER More Horses and Better Bacing than Ever Before Crowds larger and Speculation Heavy LATONIA Ky June 9 Five days of the La tonia season have passed into history and the re ¬ sult so far has fully come up to the predictions made in advance that the meeting would be the most successful in the long history of the track Greater crowds than ever have turned out ever day the speculation has exceeded in volume any like period of former years the class of horses performing is above the average while the sport itself has been of a high order and in fact positively brilliant brilliantIncreased Increased purses the most valuable ever offered on any Kentucky track have resulted in bringing to Latonia the largest number of horses that probably were ever gathered together in this coun ¬ try for any race meeting The failure to resume racing in Canada this year has also resulted in many stables coming here that would ordinarily be racing in the Dominion on the chief tracks as well as the halfmilers This condition has brought about an oversupply of racing material and crowded the stabling accommodation to the limit and forced the overflow to seek quarters in private barns ad ¬ jacent to the course Ample as are the stabling facilities at Latonia they arc wholly inadequate to meet the unprecedented demand and as a result owners of suitable property within a radius of a mile of the track are receiving good rental money for their stabling accommodations The meeting lias brought much prosperity to both Latonia and Covington and made the race course a more popu ¬ lar institution than ever everGeneral General manager Matt J Winns liberal policy since he assumed charge of the track has also done much to gain local prestige for the meeting He lias catered to local sentiment and done everything to gain local support His recent purchase of a home in Covington with the intention of becoming identified with the interests of that city has silso contributed largely toward creating among the citi ¬ zens feeling of friendship and good will willThe The Merchants Selling Stakes and the Quickstep Handicap are the chief events down for decision nt Latonia this week The former will be run Wednesday while the latter will be Saturdays chief attraction attractionThe The Merchants has an added money value of 2000 and is at the distance of one mile The stake this year received 105 nominations from wliich wilt be drawn a goodfleldf ThfeVrace was established in the year 1883 when it was won by Freeland with Isaac Murphy in the saddle and it has been run continuously each succeeding year Last years renewal was captured by J B Goodmans Bribed Voter with St Augustine sec ¬ ond and Diversion third thirdThe The Quickstep Handicap is at threequarters and has an endowment of 3000 It Is of comparatively recent origin having been first run in 1913 when Senator J N Camdens Helios proved to be the winner with Presumption and Gowell finishing back of him Other winners include The Widow Moon Hodge Kathleen Gipsey George and Lcoeh ares The last named succeeded in winning last year carrying 130 pounds and running the three quarters in 111 Fiftynine sprinters were named for this years running among the more formidable being American Ace Tacola Regalo Lucullite Blackie Daw Prince of Como Major Parkc Ocean Sweep Leochares The Porter Bon Jour Courtship Dodge Marie Miller Viva America and in fact all of the fast ones that have been showing to advantage this year
