GRAND PARADES DERBY How Lord Glanelys Irish Ameri ¬ can Colt Won Buchan Badly Bidden Failed at atEnd End The Panthers Shabby ShabbyConduct Conduct in the Race LONDON England June 1 Unfortunately the weather broke down at Epsom yesterday and a heavy and continuous rain fell all day This did not prevent an enormous crowd from putting In an appearance It was by far the largest attendance which has ever been seen on Derby day but similarly enough the victory of Grand Parade did not arouse any enthusiasm enthusiasmThere There was scarcely a cheer when Lord Glanely led his horse in yet when Viceroy had carried the royal colors first past the post in the Stewards Handicap tiiere was a remarkable demonstration demonstrationRight Right to the end The Panther maintained his position in the betting in the Derby During the parade he looked the part and on appearance he was certainly the pick of the field He was a picture of fitness but lie was inclined to be fidgety Next to The Panther Buchau was best liked He had done remarkably well since the Guineas and was a bundle of muscle If only he had a little more scope he would be a fine individual individualHOW HOW GRAND PARADE RACED AND WON WONThe The race was good to see and full of keen con ¬ tention Then was some delay caused by The Panther and Milton breaking the tapes the former beiiiir fretful but the barrier ascended to a good start Paper Money which quickly rtoolc the Inside made the running from Roamer on the right Bay of Naples on the outside White Heat Sir Douglas in the center Milton on the extreme outside The Panther in the center All Alone Grand Parade and Buchan with Corlolanus which com ¬ menced slowly bringing up the rear Thus they raced for about a half mile when Roamer and Bay of Naples lost their places Dominion going on second just clear of Grand Parade Milton and All Alone with Tangier The Panther Sir Doug ¬ las White Heat and liuchan heading the others till descending the hill to Tattenham Corner where Milton and All Alone were beaten Paper Money was pursued entering the straight by Grand Parade Dominion Buchan The Panther Tangiers White Heat and Sir Douglas Shortly afterward The Panther and Dominion collapsed whereupon Grand Parade closed with Paper Money and dashing to the front a quarter of a mile from home Lord JlaiHlys colt resisted the challenge of Buchan and won comfortably by a half length two lengths be ¬ tween second and third Sir Douglas was officially placed fourth Then came Tangiers fifth White Heat sixth All Alone seventh Milton eighth Do ¬ minion ninth The Panther tenth and Bay of Naples last except the tailedoff Coriolanus Time 235 235SUMMARY SUMMARY OF THE EPSOM DERBY DERBYDerby Derby Stakes for threeyearolds about one and a half miles Value of race 32500 HORSES HORSESV V Templeman has only recently returned from India and in Lembergs year he was second on Greenback Templeman was lucky A SmiUi had his choice of the Lord Glanely horses and chose to ride Dominion The two had never been tried together and ran on their merits without orders ordersGrand Grand Parade is u more Truly made sort than Dominion except for his forelegs The former stands a bit over at the knee but otherwise he is a bonny black standing fifteen hands three inches He did not appear to be quite ready and for some weeks now Barling has been hoping that rain would come comeGrand Grand Parade had been the stable hope for the Derby until the ground became so hard that the colt did not appear to relish the conditions and he also suffered from slightly cracked heels heelsMany Many good judges think that Buchan should have won the Derby After a sharp bout between Grand Parade and Paper Money which gave Grand Parade the lead and while they were still hard at it Buchan tried to get in between them and until Paper Money dropped back the Manton colt had none too much room roomWhether Whether this made any difference to the result is mere conjecture but considering the ground he made up Buchun was probably an unlucky loser There appeared to be no reason why Brennan should take his mount in between two horses instead of sticking positionThe to the outside position The result was that Grand Parade hung on to the end and won by half a length while Buchan beat Paper Money by two lengths for second place placeThe The winner was purchased as a foal for 2400 by C F P Creed the Irish owner and breeder for Lord Glanely GlanelyIt It is a remarkable coincidence that while Grand Parade was winning the Derby a halfbrother of Ills was finishing lust in the hurdle race at Tip perary this being Bookie which like Grand Parade was bred by Richard Croker CrokerGrand Grand Geraldine the dam of the Derby winner was bred by Dr Cleary of Hospital County Limer ¬ ick and was sold to J J Parkinson who finding her impossible to train sold her to Mr Croker for the stud Dr Cleury had the dam of Grand Geral ¬ dine in training with Watts at Newmarket at one time but she developed rheumatism
