LAST WEEK OF THE LATONIA MEETING Independence Handicap and Cincinnati Trophy He served for Windup of Brilliant Season of Sport LATONIA Ky June 28 Tomorrow Latonia en ¬ ters upon the final week of its snmmer season of racing and on next Saturday the meeting that has been the most successful in the long history of the track will come to a close Two of the seasons most attractive stakes have been reserved for the closing week while the program of overnight races arranged by secretary Shelley gives every promise of supplying brilliant sport and tends to the belief that the final week will outshine those that pre ¬ ceded it The Independence Handicap for the more mature horses and the Cincinnati Trophy are the carded stake features and as indicated the first named vwill be decided Friday the national holiday while the latter event will be the chief attraction on Saturdays card cardThe The Independence is at one mile and threesix ¬ teenths and possesses an added money value of 4000 This years renewal attracted no less than eightytwo nominations including all of the best longdistance performers in the west The field that will be named to participate in this rich event is bound to be of uniform quality and a stirring contest is anticipated Among the probable starters are St Bernard Under Fire Bribed Voter Beaver ¬ kill Rancher Freecutter The Porter Midway Courtship Buford Dodge Linden and Viva America The Independence was first run in 1910 when it was won by Pinkola the distance being a mile and a sixteenth In 1912 there was a lapse in its running and the year following the distance of the race was increased to a mile and threesixteenths That year Milton B scored a triumph running the distance in 156 which time was equaled by Rancher when he won the stake last year Inci ¬ dentally this is the track record for the distance distanceNominations Nominations to this years Cincinnati Trophy es ¬ tablished a record there having been no less than 133 entries received for this stake The race has an endowment of 5000 which makes it the most valuable of the Latonia summer stakes for twoyear olds The distance is at threequarters and the running of the race will mark the first time the youngsters will race at the increased distance The race will bring together the best juveniles of both sexes and will determine which one is entitled to premier twoyearold honors of the west It is to be regretted that T Q McDowell failed to name his two crack youngsters High Command and Dis ¬ tinction and that C E Rowes sterling filly Miss Jemima is not among theeligibles but there are enougii highclass ones among the nominees to make the contest interesting and provide a race that will be well worth witnessing E R Bradleys By Golly is among the list of eligibles as are also Red Red Rose Sam Freedman Mickey Moore Inspector Hughes Friz Ltinetta Atta Boy II Mysterious Girl and others that have shown to advantage advantageBY BY GOLLY HAS GOOD CHANCE CHANCEThe The Trophy is of comparative recent origin having been first decided in 1902 in which year it was won by Watoma Among the subsequent winners are numbered Oiseau Planute Chulita Gov ¬ ernor Gray Lady Lightning Helios Old Rosebud Blackie Daw Freecutter and Batter Cake the last named having been the victor in last years running when she scored for E R Rradley It would not be surprising were the Bradley stable to score a double victory witli By Folly as the second winner of the stake for the stable In addition to first money the winning owner will receive the Cincinnati Trophy a massive silver cup cupWith With the end of the meeting not far away officials and others are arranging their plans for the re ¬ mainder of the summer General manager Matt J Winn will remain in Kentucky for some tune after the close and then take a trip that will include New York and Saratoga He will return to Ken ¬ tucky in ample time to make the necessary arrange ¬ ments for the opening of the autumn season seasonJudge Judge Charles F Price will spend the interval at Atlantic City while starter A B Dade whose work at the barrier has been par excellence will return to his home in Henderson Ky to await the opening at Lexington Secretary Will Shelley whose efforts in framing the daily program have received much merited praise will spend the interval at his home in Louisville where he will begin work on framing condition books for the fall meetings at the various tracks tracksHorsemen Horsemen are eagerly awaiting the next meeting of the Kentucky State Racing Commission to learn the schedule of fall dates so that they can arrange their plans The allotment of dates will undoubted ¬ ly be made when the commission meets here next Saturday according to present plans The absence from the state of chairman Carnden and the illness of judge Allie W Young have made an earlier meeting of the commission impossible impossibleFrank Frank Weir intends shipping his stable to Empire City and thence to Saratoga at the termination of the Latonia meeting Old Rosebud will be taken along and raced at both places it being Weirs intention to race the old gelding just as long as he is able He will not be retired until he shows that Ida usefulness as a racer is at an end endJ J W Tex Forman who has successfully trained the horses of the widows of G rover and Hundley Baker since last fall severed his con ¬ nection with the stable when the remaining horses belonging to the establishment were sold in the paddock Saturday Forman will shortly undergo an operation on one of his eyes the sight of which is threatened by an ailment that has been bothering him for some time
