PLAN TO DEVELOP JOCKEY TALENT Novices and Award Cash Prizes NEW YORK N Y July 1 Scarcity of good jockey material has caused the Empire City manage ¬ ment to put on two races for horses to be ridden by riders that have never won d race The races will be programmed during the meeting which opens at the Yonkers course July 12 and continue to July 31 In order to stimulate interest in these races one of which will be at about threequarters of a mile and the other at a mile and a sixteenth the lucky rider will receive a special award of 25 from the Empire City Racing Association and C J Fitz Gerald This sum will buy a pair of jockey boots and breeches and should form the nucleus of a thorough equipmentGood equipment Good apprentice material in abundance was former ¬ ly to be had around New York and W C Daly and other owners who made a specialty of jockey farm ¬ ing always had a number of promising youngsters in the process of development Of late years there has been little encouragement to make riders and it is probable other organizations racing under Jockey Club control will follow the lead of the Em ¬ pire City Racing Association and offer two or more races at each of their meetings for apprentice riders ridersf Fator one of the most successful of the appren ¬ tices f riding on the local courses was developed last winter at Oriental Park in Havana Wida another good boy rode his first race iii Cuba last January
