LOOKING TOWARD SARATOGA Easterners Wondering If Another Billy Kelly Will Come from West Sir Barton Purchase and Eternal Eternalto to Meet in Dwyer Stakes Stakeson on Thursday NEW YORK N Y July 8 Owners of two yearolds of stake quality are turning their atten ¬ tion to Saratoga They are beginning to speculate on their chances of winning some of the rich stakes to he decided there during the month of August Saratoga is the trial ground for championship honors between the east and west That is where owners put their best to the test not only for financial gain but the honor of winning the Important stakes the advancement of racing anil the improvement in breeding thoroughbreds of the future There always has been great rivalry between owners of the more fashionable stables and Saratoga lias been the spot where for a half century and longer decisions have been reached This not only applies to the two yearolds but older horses In the days of the late Stephen Sanford men who had been racing their horses on the Long Island tracks were always a bit scary of the material Stephen Sanford would turn loose at Saratoga and many a good one came from the Hurrlcaua Farm Mr Sanfords breeding estab ¬ lishment Including Kockton Chuctanunda and many others of note and distinction in the turf world The present John Sanford has done much to enrich the farm with thoroughbred stock from all European countries but so far he has not had the success he deserves deservesLast Last year New York owners went up to Saratoga with a string of twoyearolds that looked more rtiiamnomlsttig to sweep the boards of ATI stakes They were considered rich in young material Ken ¬ tucky had not shown much in fact Kentuckians had little faith in their stock of youngsters This statement is gathered from the fact that the cele ¬ brated Hilly Kelly which afterwards became an idol went to the post at 10 to 1 for his first race the Flash Stakes though he was not asked to meet the best of the eastern contingent indicating his chances were not considered seriously by those who had watched his Kentucky career But it did not take long for horsemen from both districts to turn to Billy Kelly His first victory was so thorough that he became a public favorite almost immedi ¬ ately Now the question arises has Kentucky an ¬ other Billy Kelly to introduce to the easterners this year It may have Rumors here have it that Miss Jemima Cotton Blossom and By Golly are worthy youngsters and it also is asserted that Major Tom McDowell may have something to say when put on his merits meritsLAST LAST YEARS EASTERN STARS STARSLast Last year the east sent up to Saratoga such horses as Eternal War Pennant Tereutia Pigeon Wing Vindex and Dunboyiie A fair collection This year there is a much stronger hand held by the easterners Glancing over them casually there are Man o War Bonnie Mary Panoply Brookholt Hasten On Dominique Cobwebs Wildair Upset Sammy Lady Brummel and it is asserted one or two in the Karrick stable and one fast horse be ¬ longing to either Mr or Mrs Jeffords which has been working out of the ordinary Commander Ross may also have a rare good horse in Kings Thrush It is on public form and rnmor a superior band to the candidates of last year possibly with the ex ¬ ception of Eternal Looking over their records Man o War is conceded to be the peer at present Jn fact he lias not yet met defeat having won five races and withottCapparejit great effort It is true he has not yet met the best but his work lias been so convincing that he would surely be the choice in any race and in any company If Jom Maddens predictions are verified Man o War will be fully extended to beat Brookholt the Ballot Gracilla colt supposed to be the pick of the Mad ¬ den 1919 collection Brookholt may be a champion His initial race was a victory in a maiden race l ut he won as his rider pleased How much bet ¬ ter he can do remains to be seen when meeting good horses The opinion prevails however he will have his work vut out to make Man o War ex ¬ tend himself The Whitney stable will have a strong hand in Wildair Sammy which is claimed to be better than Wildair by the stable associates Panoply Cobwebs which broke a track record at Aqueduct and Uiwct At this writing howaver the two stars are Man o War and Bonnie Mary Tli latter has three brackets to her credit She should have had four out of five starts She was once beaten by Totijours at Jamaica through the merconfideuct of Ensor who eased her up when e thought he had all contention beaten That lie is an exceptional filly is unquestioned and opinions are about divided InHween the daughter of Ultiiuus Belgravia and Mr Whitneys Panoply But all these reputed stars will come together at Saratoga with the Kentucky contingent added Consequently there is much to IKJ threshed out for those concerned in the present and future of the younger division of horses horsesMUCH MUCH INTEREST IN DWYER STAKES STAKESThe The race that is attracting attention in this section tills week is tin Dwyer Stakes named after the lat Phil Dwyer formerly president of the Aqueduct and Cravesend tnickn Tills is really the Brooklyn Derby It is more than probable the three master threeyearold Purchase Sir Barton and Eternal will go to tin jw st among others Should these three be carded it IH doubtful if there will be much lse in the race That will Iw sufficient to attract a monster crowd for it will be the race of the Keaiton so far Sir Barton has beaten Eternal more than once but he has never beaten Purchase The latter has also beaten Eternal but Eternal turned the tables on the Hildreth threeyearold in the Brooklyn Handicap but was in receipt of twelve iKiunds upon that occasion It is doubtful if Eturnal can beat him with equal stake weights up over a considerable distance of ground many experts declaring that Eternal improves consider ¬ ably with light weight up The Dwyer conse ¬ quently resolves itself into a contest between Sir Barton and Purchase That is the general opinion Both are training satisfactorily Sir Barton having worked a mile easily over the Aqueduct course in 140 Dow much faster he could have gone is the secret of his trainer but Mr Bedwell was pleased with the workout Over the Belmont course Purchase covered a mile last week in 137 in fact some of the dockers made it nearer 130 This was a phenomenal trial according to experts in fact there are those who declared it to be too fast for the good of the colt Mr Hildreth no doubt 1 master of the situation and knows better what the horse needs than outsiders outsidersKim Kim Patterson who trains Eternal was satisfied with the trial of Eternal last week when he covered a mile in 141 over the Jamaica course It was all he asked of him as he had previously shown him a sample of speed covering threeeighths in the neighborhood of 34 seconds two days before All three horses are ready for the race and it is the hope of the multitude of racegoers that they go to the post for the Dwyer Stakes The weights vary as Sir Burton will carry 127 pounds Purchase 118 and Eternal 121 pounds
