FOUR MORE AUSTRALIAN PEDIGREES Ancestral Lines that Produced Such Racers and Sires as Chester Positano Poisedon and Kennaqnhair Chester was one of the great horses of oldtime Australian racing Moreover when he was done with the turf he followed in the ways of his sire Yattendon in becoming a great and famous sire himself In racing he won nineteen capital prizes and was only four times unplaced in fortyone races He was a small horse but a great weight carrier and stayer He headed the sire list in 1887 mainly through prowess of his mighty son Aber corn and again in 1889 through his son Dread naught and his daughter Spice the latter a sister to Abercorn which won the Oaks at both Sydney and Melbourne while Dreadnought won the Victoria Derby both St Legers and wound up his three yearold career by taking the Australian Cup at two miles and a quarter In 359 with 118 pounds up Chesters influence is felt jp Australian breed ¬ ing of today and his pedigree was Positano was one of the first sons of St Simon taken to Australia Many a one has been taken thtj fil e H f ac thtre s dispoeitioa SKrC now to think that too much St Simon blood has been infused in their breeding to the detriment of their own hardbottomed native stock Be that as it may Positano was a grandly successful sire four of his sons Lord Cardigan Poisedon Lord Nolan and Piastre figuring in their days as winners of Australias greatest race the Melbourne Cup His nedieree reads as follows One of the famous horses which Positano pre ¬ sented to Australian racing was his son Poisedon probably his best This was a wonderfully good race horse He won the Victoria Derby and St Leger the Australian Jockey Club Derby and St Leger took the Caulfield Cup twice and set the seal on his greatness when he won the Melbourne Cup of 1906 in a field of twentyone starters being then a threeyearold and carying 101 pounds which included a twelvepound penalty His ancestral linea to sixteen qiiarterings are Kennaquhair is a racing star of the present in Australia and an exceedingly fast horse His triumphs this year and last have been given fre ¬ quent recitals in Daily Racing Form His ancestry is in part along the lines of Poisedous St Simon and Musket being prominent in each His quite iintnrtfitA iwdigree is
