Lord .Brightons Sprinting Blood Son of Ballot and Miss Crittenden Is Bred on Both Sides for Speed Mather Than Staying By EXILE Lord Brighton, too. another of Past Master Hil-dreths Latonia Championship candidates, was out in a winning effort, beating that good and consistent filly Enfilade on the same afternoon on which. Mad Hatter scored his best success. In point of class the field defeated by Lord Brighton was superior to that which finished astern of Mad Hatter. The staying qualities of either have yet to be put to the test; Lord Brighton, in fact, has never essayed a farther distance than six and one-half furlongs. The son of Ballot did not this year begin racing until the Saratoga meeting was well advanced. On August 23 ho had the misfortune to be left standing in the three quarters of a mile race in which he was engaged. On his next appearance Lord Brighton wound up a most creditable second to the six-year-old Startling, the veteran Old Rosebud being in third place, a good race surely; but his last his best. No intelligent estimate, however, can as yet be made of Lord Brightons staying powers. What does his pedigree suggest? Bred on altogether orthodox lines Lord Brightons lines are suggestive of extreme speed rather than endurance. Ballot, sire of Lord Brighton, could stay well enough and was a tough, hardy sort, a regular stop gap, in fact, for some of his less rugged stablematos. The offspring of Ballot seem to have a way with them of improving with age, but the Hermits, as a family, are noted mainly for their speed, as was Ballots sire, Voter. Miss Crittenden, dam of Lord Brighton, is a daughter of the rapid fire horse Royal Flush, which once beat Englands best sprinter, Eager. Dainteous, the granddam, is by the Dare-bin horse Del Paso, whose dam, Bavaria, is by Australians son Spendthrift. A really well balanced pedigree has Lord Brighton, but it must not be forgotten there is a free introduction of sprinting blood on both sides of the house. Lord Brighton is of Eclipse descent via Hermit and New-minster, and Miss Crittenden a daughter of the Herod horse Royal Flush and Dainteous, by Del Paso, son of the Melbourne and Sydney Cup winner and Matchem sire Darebin. Lord Brighton is a member of the imported Merry Wife, by Beadsman family, a family, so far as I am aware, renowned chiefly because of the speed of its members, and this, in addition to his Hermit descent, makes one doubt the ability of Lord Brighton to win over the Championship course carrying so heavy an impost as 122 pounds.
